member in Malcolm X, when he bumped into buddy at that bar, the line about him being a "country nikka"

:wow:woooo, so much history in them two words and that 'scust in that brehs voice

but I do wonder if this trend will amplify now that you have a lot of people migrating to more smaller metros

You ever seen "Soldier's Story":mjlol: They touched a little on this dynamic in that movie

here too

calling a black person a "geechee" is used the same way as "country" or "bamma" amongst some aframs:stopitslime:

Ehh....it's not really a North vs South thing. It was more of a big city-urban vs country/rural, thing.

The older version of it would have been free people of color vs enslaved/freed slaves
Happened with my own parents. Still to this day my mother still clowns my pops for being from the country
:heh:

Classicism aside, does anyone actually understand their concerns and the fears that they had?

Yes, it's very easy to dismiss them as snobs, which one of the ladies actually referred to herself as such, so at least there was some sort of self-awareness, but does anyone dismiss their concerns as illegitimate or ill-placed?

Also note that there is a diversity of thought in that room. Everyone was not on the same page.

In New York, elite African Americans founded the Sons of New York in 1884 to publicly mark their distance from the Southerners.

The AA community in Houston has always been made up significant contributions of people from out of town and state. Plus, there was never any distinctly 'black elite' community in H town(no riverside terrace doesn't count). But, I have read that there in the 20s to 40s there were some 'differences' between the the francophone catholic creole AAs from southern louisiana and the non-creole anglophone protestant AAs mostly from rural east TX particularly in the 5th ward.

Whatever it was it must've blew off quickly within the first generation, because the vast majority of us native black houstonians have mixed rural east tx and rural southern la heritage.

Plus the mixing of those two (sub)cultures gave us zydeco and southeast tx bbq and the rest of this crazy cowboy creole culture.

:ohlawd:

This happened in Chicago.

The Old Settlers Club was formed by Ida Macintosh Dempsey. Requirement for membership was that your family had to be in Chicago before the Great Fire of 1871.

The Old Settlers Social Club served as a way for members to stay connected in a rapidly growing city, and to also distinguish themselves from the new arrivals who displayed cultural behaviors that were different and sometimes at odds with the refined sensibilities of the pioneering families.

Despite its small size and exclusivity, The Old Settlers Social Club was active across the black community until the middle of the 20th century, and was recognized as a leading social and civic organization in the city. A 1943 article in the Herald American acknowledged the clubs dedication to promoting high standards for the black community stating the Old Settlers "set the pattern of progress for years to come."

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
On the surface. Blacks in Detroit Chicago Milwaukee would be just as poor if not for the Democrats & the welfare system. Also the drug trade run by the government make it look better. The education system & job opportunities are the same in the north & the south. At least the south has HBCUs

Not every “black college” is an HBCU. Perfect example. Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn.

You can attend Medgar Evers and learn the exact same criteria you would learn in most HBCUs. Only difference is that Medgar Evers isn’t “historic” and it’s a city college.

Back In the day the south for the most part was rural. So it was north vs south.

Can you explain the fears and concerns they had? And their reasoning?
