Reading and math competency chart broken down by race and state. Black Americans are doing pitiful.

Y'all conflating too much in here and it's usually intended to shift blame and feel good about yourselves

I have my own personal views about college being a scam and largely unnecessary outside of certain specialties. The thing is college is irrelevant to the topic and y'all know it is so why is it even being discussed?

Kids being able to read is the bare fukkin minimum and there is no excuse good enough to blame funding or the system on. Mind you this same system, fukked up as it is, provides the resources for your child to be able to read. No excuses

The only people in here being honest are the ones saying this shyt starts at home
Straight lack of accountability. shyt is pathetic.

at the end of the day a person is responsible for their child. that's law under god, that's law under the states. if the school system fails do to racism it's on the parent to teach the kid when they understand that is what they are facing. if the entertainment is going to go to the kids head, it's the parents job to mitigate and prevent that. if you understand that you can not stand in the gap for your kid on everything, it's on you not to have kids until you can.
recognizing contributing factors is not mutually exclusive to recognizing who the ultimate responsibility lies on.

but your question was are black parents bad parents. is a stupid fukkin question because any race can be a bad parent. do better.

Again, when you blame all your failures on systematic racism, you will never be successful. That's how we got to this point.

There are some things we can control and there are some things we can't control. We can control the hunger for academics. We can push black kids to read the newspaper and get some books from the library.

I mean, we see systemic racism every day but we also need to do everything to overcome it. I see some do but many simply do not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a lack of funding for schools in the inner city? Like, soem schools are complete garbage. You will not succeed if you have the worst schools and teachers.

Who needs reading and math when you buy fresh Jordan’s, buy the new Madden and finance a Scat Pack while slinging cases at a warehouse or doing construction work.:francis:

Young brehs aren’t exactly being pushed to shoot for the stars or anything. And that’s a shame.

It’s parenting. Nothing else.

My child is in AP everything.

We got guardianship of her cousin (same age) a few months ago and her cousin has been below grade level for years.

Well, 2 months with us forcing her to do what she knows needs to be done, and sitting through her tears and tantrums got the grades respectable. She’s not advanced, but she’s not behind and she’s passing.

I don’t think she’s ever had someone explain her lessons to her after school. I’m pretty sure most kids haven’t. How can they learn what they can’t learn if there’s no one to help?

By the time she graduates, I expect her to be an A, B student but hope she can get in some AP classes. Time will tell.

Breh again,

Lack funding is not an excuse for basic reading and arithmetic. Some kids are reading before they even get to school.

People don’t want to talk about it, but these kids vocabulary is literally just straight hip-hop slang that they’re hearing in songs. These kids don’t realize that it’s not real English.
What is real English?

American English is just a b*stardization of the queen's English which is a b*stardization of a bunch of German languages

same way you can hand a kid a tablet to watch youtube and tiktok, do the same for educational shyt on there too.
Yep. Khan Academy Kids is EXCELLENT from the time the kids are 4-5 years old. PBS Kids isn't too far behind. Block YouTube off top and maybe allow YouTube Kids every now and then.

Latinos in Florida = lots of Cubans that were the elite (doctors, lawyers, landowners etc) back home. They gave up their position among The 1% to escape Castro since he wasn't having it.

Asians are tricky because you've got Hmong/Laotians grouped with Samoans, Koreans, Pakistanis etc. Some Asian groups do really well, while others struggle. I know Indians make the most money and Filipinos make quite a bit from being nurses and phlebotomists etc. Academically, I bet Indians >> Chinese/Korean/Japanese but it's close.

Black kids? It's not innate ability. What trips our kids up is a lack of preparation. We send our kids to school and expect the teachers to give them everything. Your kid should know how to read and have some degree of comprehension, do some basic arithmetic etc

I remember too many times in class. There would always be the loud/disruptive Black kid that will be the first to tell everyone "Tamika breaff stank" and point and laugh....but be struggling to read some basic azz sentences in a book. Shyt was embarrassing. How you gon run your mouth 24/7, always finding time to clown on people.....but you can barely read a page of an age-appropriate book?
Yeah, Indians scored high the year before. Was pretty surprised.

That last part you mentioned is the messed up part.

That kid who has a tough time learning will act out in class, drag people down with them, make the teachers' job more difficult, be the class clown, etc. as well.

What I honestly think needs to happen is some good old fashioned Tiger Parenting. It's funny all these years later when people said her daughters would hate her, what instead ended up happening was her daughters went on to Ivy League schools, successful and ended up in really good relationships with their parents. That Tiger Parent's father is also one of the greatest Electrical Engineers of all-time (Chua Circuits and Memristors), basically all his kids and grandkids are successful. Maybe they did know what they're talking about. A lot of these kids need discipline and active monitoring.

It doesn't even have to be that extreme, but a lot more on the stern and active side than the hands-off approach.

Some kids got dumbass parents who can't read either. Something still needs to be done to educate them in spite of their parents.
We leave it entirely to the parents and nothing will be done. How we expect the blind to lead the blind.
We have immigrants who can read or speak the language so have no idea how to assist the kids with their homework, and their kids still excell somehow so its possible.
