I'm still tryna understand what kinda star is The Eternals or Shang Chi supposed to be :skip:
They're D level characters
But at this point Marvel/Disney could make a movie about Man Thing and it would put butts in seats
The MCU was brilliant in its execution (for the most part) and gave fans what they've wanted for decades; a cohesive universe
Comic book movies used to be cringe and an embarrassment
Now they are box office gold and some people can't handle that

Look at all this star power in a non MCU movie just to flop in 2022. He would have a point if they were cranking out legit competition with these "real movies".

Damn not even Taylor Swift saved it :wow:

The weirdest aspect to me is the way viewers have been turned into corporate shills for Disney. On some level it reminds me of when 50 Cent was talking about soundscans and sales nonstop. Then there's this weird identity based aspect where any criticism results in you being accused of dismissing the voices of marginalized and minority creatives. We're literally watching a robot adopt and appropriate social justice language in order to sell you braindead, artless children movies.

In the year 2022, 27 American films have grossed over $100 million worldwide

Of those 27, only 9 aren’t a sequel and/or tied to a franchise/IP with an established fanbase

Elvis
The Bad Guys
Bullet Train
Smile
The Lost City
Nope
The Black Phone
Ticket to Paradise
Everything Everywhere All at Once

Of these 9 how many of them can you say the biggest draw was the starpower of the lead actor(s) :ld:

He's right. People don't say they're going to see the new Chris Evans, or Hemsworth movie. They say they going to that new Thor movie

Back in the day you were going to see the new will smith, denzel or cruise movie

Yeah, this is part of it for the artsy fartsy complainers. Marvel did change the game, movies are something else now, they need to have that event feel to do big numbers, get a big budget, get complete and full backing from studios. Also, Marvel specifically makes movies via collaboration with actors, directors and producers. The singular vision of a director had kinda been handicapped. But then again there are directors that can put butts in seats just off their name. The complainers are just has beens in that regard.

Nope's biggest draw was its director.

I think Tom Hanks gave Elvis a little legitimacy.
Brad Pitt was the draw for Bullet Train.
Sandy has a solid fanbase that will see anything she's in plus with a bonus of Magic Mike and Brad Pitt
Clooney and Roberts together is the draw for Ticket to Paradise.
What's facinating about these movies is those stars are all over 55 years old which is kinda what QT is saying. Marvel hasn't created any box office movie stars.

Austin Butler who played Elvis and was introduced to the world in a QT movie might be able to capitalize off this if he gets the Oscar nom.
Kevin Bacon's daughter was good in Smile and will have good performances going forward but she's not a movie star.
Daniel and Keke were great in Nope but they are not going to get any bigger than what they are now.
To early to call on those kids in the Black Phone.
All the major actors in Everything Everywhere are all old and have pretty much already peaked.

There are still plenty of movie stars. Timothee Chalmet and Tom Holland (marvel affiliated) are spoiled for choice with their roles.

Marvel has boosted the profile of Chris Hemsworth too and hes now in all sorts of things. Before captain America the thing Chris Evans was known for was that bad fantastic four movie. If you get linked up with marvel and can actually act, you can be turned into a household name in a year.

There are exceptions to Taratino's philosophy:
RDJ has had hits in between Marvel projects like Due Date(211 milly and Sherlock Holmes 500 milly)
Scarlett Johanson has had hits like Ghost in the Shell(160+ milly and Lucy 460+milly)
Jeremy Renner and Paul Rudd had a slew of hit movies before too.

To be honest, most of the Actors they chose to be Super heroes were not necessarily leading men and women. They're more like character actors. Mark Ruffallo was already acclaimed(Zodiac etc), but no one was trying to see a move because of him. Paul Bettany and Tom Hiddleston are acclaimed British actors, but no real hits.

!!!!!!!

Certain actors used to effectively be their own genre of movie.

Adam Sandler at one point basically could have had his own section in a video store. Jim Carrey too.

That hasn't gone away completely. As recently as the mid to late 2010's we had Melissa Mccarthy and Kevin Hart doing as their own movie star comedy genres, but you can clearly see that being phased out as the industry constricts down to franchise films and pre-remake-sequels, where movie stars aren't really needed, except to do voice acting in animated movies (something Kevin Hart is doing a lot of nowadays).

Talent that used to be able to cultivate moderate to high box office followings and become movie "brands", are now basically being regulated to streaming and TV. It makes for good TV content, but you can see how Hollywood purists are letdown by how big screen talent and content is shrinking down to the small screen.
Another side effect of this is the extinction of trained voice actors. Kevin Hart and Chris Pratt in an animated movie has more pull than an unknown voice actor.
