all depends on the contract the coach signs and the nature of the 'firing.'

Sometimes it is mutual: The Pistons parted ways with Larry Brown because Brown wanted to coach the Knicks.

A team might have a clause that allows them to fire the coach without having to pay the full amount, or they might be able to pay the difference if they get another coaching gig. Or the coach may be in demand and be able to negotiate a fully guaranteed contract.

Yeah I think it's atypical for there to be some type of reduction or pay difference. Never heard of a coach getting full buyout while simultaneously getting another check. Only caveat is if it's a non-head coach role.

Monty had such a pristine image a few years ago. He was the darling of the NBA coaching world. I'm still shocked they didn't get at least one in Phoenix w/ him at the helm.

Team stinks but he probably gets a very long leash. The owner clearly has deep pockets. If Cassell wants a job I’d at least listen

I like Monty as a coach and by all accounts he's a great dude but man what he did with Ivey this past season was crazy. He should've given that dude way more PT and been a lot more lenient with him, instead of forcing Killian Hayes minutes.
