all depends on the contract the coach signs and the nature of the 'firing.'

Sometimes it is mutual: The Pistons parted ways with Larry Brown because Brown wanted to coach the Knicks.

A team might have a clause that allows them to fire the coach without having to pay the full amount, or they might be able to pay the difference if they get another coaching gig. Or the coach may be in demand and be able to negotiate a fully guaranteed contract.
Yeah I think it's atypical for there to be some type of reduction or pay difference. Never heard of a coach getting full buyout while simultaneously getting another check. Only caveat is if it's a non-head coach role.
