Also it's crazy how a business can absorb this cost. Assuming that the next coach gets at least $12M. That's an unbudgeted hit to payroll. For a smaller franchise too. I am absolutely fascinated on the finances of NBA teams. Like what does the statements look like.
Pistons are not a small market team. There is no cap for coaches and Gores one of the riches owners in NBA.

More than likely they'll go the cheaper route with a coach that can grow along with the roster, otherwise it makes no sense to fire Monty.

So 20M from Suns, plus 65M from the Pistons. Wow.

What happens if he gets another head coaching job, is the buyout reduced? Same if he gets an assistant role?
all depends on the contract the coach signs and the nature of the 'firing.'

Sometimes it is mutual: The Pistons parted ways with Larry Brown because Brown wanted to coach the Knicks.

A team might have a clause that allows them to fire the coach without having to pay the full amount, or they might be able to pay the difference if they get another coaching gig. Or the coach may be in demand and be able to negotiate a fully guaranteed contract.

With how desperate they were to sign him, if the bolded was actually the case.
