It is sad to see what the Pistons organization has become. I want to say it started when they signed Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to those ridiculous contracts

It started when Bill Davidson died. He was a visionary. Bad Boy Pistons where the first team to have a private team plane.

Been crap ever since he died

Nope

Chauncey got traded summer of 2008

Davidson died 2009

We make the 2009 NBA finals with Chauncey, we owned the Orlando magic during that era

We were the first professional sports team with a private plane, in the 80s. Best believe Davidson was not calling shots nearing his death bed

The same exact thing could have been said and was said about Monty though based on the contract that they gave him and how desperate they were to sign him. Let's not have revisionist history about it because it didn't work out.

They soured on him pretty quickly, so whose to say that it won't happen to the next coach?

That's something that candidates should definitely asked in the interview.

The Pistons had $65 million reasons to keep Monty and still let him go and the next coach is obviously going to be making less than that.
He had to be all time, record setting terrible, make some completely inexplicable bonehead decisions, and coach with 0 fire and carry himself like he absolutely didn't wanna be there, all of which he did. He didn't just get fired because he did a poor job. Owners are looking for every reason to keep someone on board that's still going to be owed 65m. The next coach will for sure have a longer leash just from a financials standpoint, but also because they just have to basically just not be as bad as Monty. And from a historical perspective, right now that's pretty damn easy to do.

Also it's crazy how a business can absorb this cost. Assuming that the next coach gets at least $12M. That's an unbudgeted hit to payroll. For a smaller franchise too. I am absolutely fascinated on the finances of NBA teams. Like what does the statements look like.

These owners don’t give a shyt… the fact is these equity valuations will continue to rise and if they have to take a hit on their cash flow so be it.

Typically speaking there’s offset language. That’s part of the reason Monty got a big bag from the Pistons, he was already getting $8M a year from the Suns not to work.

Very rare for guys to be able to double dip

you can double dip in salary as long as you dont sign as a head coach though— ie Mike Brown was still getting paid out by the Cavs when he was an assistant coach w the Warriors
