Simple. Because that was a team poised to win now and I don't think they were gonna entrust the immediate future on a rookie QB that people had doubts on. By the time Lamar Jackson woulda figured it out, they might have missed their window of opportunity. Also, if you spend $84 mil guaranteed on a QB, you don't draft a QB in round 1 for insurance. That's a waste either way. Have conviction one way or another. If you draft a QB in round 1 immediately after giving a QB that kind of money, maybe you shouldn't be picking players for my team.
Chiefs were in win now mode and still picked Mahomes

Having that level of confidence on Cousin is some next level delusion.

Yes look at the last 20 years where you have had young Brady, old Brady (yet somehow not prime playing or earning Brady though), old Manning, Joe Flacco, Eli twice, young Russ, Brad Johnson, Trent

Brady missed a whole season and they still managed to go 11-5. He was suspended 4 games, the back up got hurt and they still went 3-1 a few years ago. Pats were constantly worried about having a back up for Brady. You got two former Pats backups, starting on other teams now. Jimmy G had the big bad "GOAT" so shook that he went over Beli's head to have him shipped out. Bottom line is, you win by having a thorough ass squad regardless of how good your QB is.

Again, that is a luxury the Pats have had that most teams don't. It's like having a really good coach tenured for a long time. He then is able to make guys on his staff look so good that other teams are willing to offer his coordinators head coaching jobs. It's not nearly as easy when you're coaching for your own job. Brady missed a year like you said and NE won 11 games with Matt Cassel. It got Cassel a big contract and a starting gig on another team, but the Pats never thought of dealing Brady, get what they could and then rock with Cassel or Brissett or Garoppolo (though he was the closest we came to this). Why? Cuz the Pats aren't dumb. Your squad gotta be thorough but on the Pats, there are four indispensable parts to their run: the head coach, the QB, Devin McCourty and Hightower (or whoever their main linebacker is)

Chiefs also had the luxury of being able to sit him for his first year because they had Alex Smith whose timeline would have ended around the time Mahomes was ready. It woulda looked dumb to take Mahomes if the idea was to pay out the ass to keep Smith at QB, which they didn't do.

Having that level of confidence on Cousin is some next level delusion.
but that's what happened. Cousins actually took less money from the Jets to go to the Vikings. The Cousins sweepstakes was a real thing.

Doesn't this kinda directly fly in the face of what you are trying to say :patrice:. Only indispensable piece is Beli. Obviously, Brady is very important but with the way Beli coaches circles around other coaches with regularity they could figure it out (shyt they have figured it out) with someone else in his spot. Of course the Pats aren't dumb...they aren't gonna get rid of a healthy, proven QB that will accept peanuts for guys that will be demanding big money deals before they have done anything. Brady gives the Pats a cheat code in this modern era...a truly great QB that you don't have to pay or treat like it. If he demanded his market value, he would have been shipped out like many other important cogs in the machine.

At the end of the day the NFL is a coaches league.

Jameis from being potentially out the league to prob getting at least to a missed kick away from being in first place with the inside track on winning the division. MIght get one of those tannehill type extensions at the very least

Saints and panthers winning with backups.

Reich should be 3-1 with Brissett

No. Before Hightower they had Mayo and Ninkovich and before that it was McGinest. They had someone hold down MLB for a long time each time. It's Hightower's spot now.

Breh you can't call someone indispensable and then name four other cats that played their role effectively.

Bruce gonna have Winston balling this weekend against the Saints. I hate the say it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a 30-20 game if we got Bridgewater throwing 7 yard flea flickers and Kamara starts to get bottled up.

Missing the point. Belichick has been incredible at being able to replace guys who were there for a long long time. That's just great scouting, but the guys they had weren't considered irreplaceable when they were there. That's what I'm saying. He didn't dump them the way he did with a lot of other guys that passed through there
