and your point is ? theres teams with a good position group that can be improved by getting a better other position group, and vice versa
That those issues for the most part are easier to remedy than QB.
right, right. like youve said, hall of famer superbowl winner nick foles was a first round pick groomed to be in such a position.
oh wait no he wasnt; he was a 3rd round pick and he was about to quit football a year before because no one in the league besides andy reid wanted him as a backup.
Who was stepping in for a QB Philly moved heaven and earth to trade up to #2 for. Even they subscribed to that logic. If anything Philly reinforced why even having a decent backup is a good idea if you can get it.
would he get fired any later if he didnt select a quarterback ? would the jets front office even LET HIM select a non-qb ? this is what Im saying. for the rebuilding team, hope is always with that 'qb' who needs to be drafted
Yes and Yes. For years all they did was take defensive linemen and thought they could address a QB by taking one every year later until one magically developed. That's how they wound up with Christian Hackenberg. He thought THAT was gonna buy him time and sell fans on hope. What proceeded to happen was that the team sucked and the QB's he picked were so bad he wouldn't let them see the field. Those picks were so bad, he took Darnold the following year and it didn't buy him time because he screwed up too many times.
the concept of 'building around the qb' is...trash
the concept of 'qb is the most important piece' is...trash
I don't disagree, but the concept of being a QB away and thinking nowadays you'll find it anywhere other than the first round of a draft is trash too now.
get what done? winning a football game is a team's accomplishment. don't really get why you keep wanting to go down this rabbit hole. why are there specifically quarterbacks who 'get it done' or 'don't get it done'. Why arent you saying this about cornerbacks, wide receivers, running backs, linemen ? the situation isnt any difference, you shouldnt be special if you are a qb. you suck, next man up.
But next man up is coming from where? If my receivers suck, theoretically I can find a WR in the middle rounds of a draft or free agency and not miss much of a beat. It's more likely that I can find those guys at other positions from wherever and still contend. Take a look at the starters now in the NFL at QB. Less than a third of them come from outside of round 1.
Brees- 2
Wilson- 3
Brady- 6
Foles- 3/Minshew 6
Dalton- 2
Prescott- 4
Carr- 2
Cousins- 4
Brissett- 3
Garoppolo- 2
this isnt about which round qb they are replaced by, this is about starting mediocre options and paying them big money instead of getting their replacements in the first place. something that doesnt happen with any other position, YES, including the RB position.
That is no different than say NBA free agency when players get overpaid. It's supply and demand and not wanting to come back empty handed. You pay a QB because a) you DO think he's really good and b) because you can't realistically let a player walk and then tell fans, "hey don't worry we have this 4th round QB who isn't as ready or as talented as the guy who left, we'll be fine" and expect to remain employed. If that QB was ready or talented, he wouldn't be in the 4th round anymore. Some team woulda reached for him in the first. That's how it works now. I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying that's how it is.
the chiefs were lucky that they were stacked and had a luxury of grabbing mahomes in the mid first and then letting him sit. they easily couldve stayed with alex smith and be competitive and playoff contenders. they chose to do exactly what we're saying they should do- upgrade to a cheap young talent instead of keeping average talent and paying him tons of money because hes a qb. they also lucked out mahomes is an incredible talent, but I could think of a few situations where mahomes career starts rocky instead.
Keyword= upgrade. How many upgrades at QB can you realistically expect to keep happening after every rookie deal ends?
