KD is wrong. Winning has never been the only thing that mattered. Competing and being entertaining matters as well. Basketball is a business and a product. Without the fans they will have nothing.

Nobody is asking them to play like its game 7 in the playoffs during the all star game. But all they got to do is put in some effort and actually try to win. They are paid to play basketball for a living. How hard is that? The level of effort in the all star games is just like the level of effort chris paul and wemby had when they did the skills challenge. They were not even trying to shoot the ball. There is a big difference between a good faith effort to play the game and not even pretending to give a damn. Fans are reacting cause they are not even trying to play.
I think he’s saying that’s all the fans and media care about nowadays. Especially talking heads like Stephen a smith and such

Say what you want about KD but he generally is honest & direct. Gotta respect it. He’s not putting anyone down just calling it straight

I'm more shocked people disagree, y'all say this same stuff all the time about not watching till April. And only the playoffs mattering.

This is the least controversial basketball take in 20 years.

It's ok to not watch basketball it's not going to go out of business. Embrace the casualness
Because no one says this. These nikkas not caring about the Allstar game and dunk contest is a new thing within the last 12 years. KDs generation led by lebron caused this

The NBA’s core problem is that in order to maximize the global appeal of the game, they had to completely alter the product to create a showcase type of basketball that purists despise and players largely don’t give a fukk about.

Compare this to the NFL, NHL and MLB. These leagues are considered the peak of their sports in terms of playing in a traditional manner, that also happens to be entertaining. I had a friend who basically said “if you love hockey you love the NHL” because the rules and gameplay are very in line with how traditional hockey is played.

The NBA lets players get away with countless carries, travels, thrive off of free throws, has inconsistent officiating, and has ruled physicality out of the game. This makes for a stark viewing experience especially when compared to say FIBA which has more physical, grind it out matches that often time rewards teams just for being bigger and stronger.

The lack of tradition and prestige also trickles down into the player culture. NFL, Major league baseball and the NHL have very rich cultures and proud traditions so playing in the league is considered a huge honor. Players feel honored and pride being apart of certain clubs like the Yankees, Bruins, Steelers, Niners, Eagles… you really only see this in the NBA with the Celtics and maybe the Spurs and Lakers. The NBA is just way too player centric.

The other league players have more respect for their sports reputation, but additionally there’s always the danger of the “next guy up” that I think keeps a lot of these players loyal and willing to fall in line with whatever club they play for.

That’s not really a thing in the NBA as even complete busts like Johnny Davis, James Wiseman, and Jahlil Okafor are still hanging around NBA rosters. This creates a culture of comfort and complacency with the players. And that’s not even factoring in how these contracts make these guys too comfortable and non-waivable. Jeff Teague (who is the spokesperson of unserious and apathetic player culture, though I love his podcast) basically said that he stopped giving a fukk after he got his second contract, and he played for four more years after getting his contract :dead:

Lastly, showcase Basketball product just wasnt meant to be this 3 ball centric. as I said in another post, the three ball solves a lot of logistic issues that make roster building easier and creates parity, but don’t exactly make for a viable viewing product. The funny thing is, spamming the three ball is still the best way to play winning basketball as our ability to hit the three ball is what made the USA successful in the Olympics.

No he's not...:skip:

KD is full of shyt and his logic is retarded.

The beautiful thing about YouTube is you can see this shyt for yourself. I randomly picked the 1991 ASG and the 1988 ASG. There's more intensity withing the first few minutes of those games than every ASG from 2020 until yesterday COMBINED.

I've accepted the reality of what this current generation of NBA athlete is...but I'll be damned if KD's goofy ass tries to act like shyt has always been this way.

The dunk contest fell off so bad in the 90s that they didn't even do it in 1998.
Glad you pointed this out.

There were also some underwhelming all star games played in that era.

Folks wanna act like the 90s NBA was a place of perfection.

5 years before Lebron was in the league, yet people still want to scapegoat him for just about everything.

When I was thinking during the game yesterday, he's right about people making bytching a sport.

But people like he and Draymond don't even take accountability ever, the changes and why people bytch is because their generation switched up.

What I've observed is that the whole showmanship of the NBA is gone. People are now either just playing for the heaviest bags in sports, or they are just very boring professional athletes whose only goal is to reach as far as possible in the playoffs. It's minimum effort to reach the playoffs that's it. Zero fukks given about entertainment, giving fans their money's worth etc. It's not in their contract, and when the wind blows in one way it's hard to go against it alone. As we saw in yesterdays games with Kyrie, Steph, Wemby and some of them who were at least trying

Mike grew up watching Julius, Kobe grew up watching Mike. Zeke grew up watching Pearl and Clyde, Marbury grew up watching Zeke.

That "flair" that's missing comes from the inner cities and playgrounds. Local street ballers and high school legends we used to idolize that don't exist anymore. Playground ball is dead. Courts I used to play at in Detroit where if you lost you were done for 2-3 hours have tumbleweeds rolling around them today.

The league is "unseasoned" because the culture is gone.
