this was a bad song, not even speaking on the efficacy of the diss

Cole has been transparent with this period in time of his career. He's not the only guy that put out something that their core fanbase didn't like.

Wale dropped that shyt with Lady GaGa
Budden dropped Pump It Up

It happened to many artists that came up through mixtapes and landed on majors... With that said, his career and relevancy in music lasted much longer than those other dudes because he learned from his experiences and got better... And he didn't make excuses for it.

He had other lead singles that were much more on brand for him but the label wasn't green lighting his debut until he made Workout

Born Sinner was a great follow up record for Cole with plenty of songs that are still easily playable today.

Cole improved throughout the years I’m not knocking his career I enjoyed many of his songs and the skills he has displayed. Does he have any project that transcended beyond rap ……. I’m not quite sure

I don’t remember anyone having a problem with that song it’s the song that put him on without that he’s shelved Nas didn’t like it and the shyt took a life of its own. It’s a typical song for that era and a simple record nothing to deep dive or critique.
I mean sure, it was cool. But mixtape Cole fans saw that record as a necessary evil at the time. (I remember vividly because I was a fan since The Warm Up).

Blow Up was a song that really fit perfectly with Cole dropping... But Jay was like nah. They basically made that man put out a record that would do well with women. Even on his debut album, Workout is the last song on there 😂

I'm pretty sure Cole felt defeated after they bushed that song as his lead single low-key

This is a VAST difference from how Kendrick was handled during his debut release with Dre. Swimming Pools is something that gets made when the executive producer is truly trying to mesh the grassroots elements from an artist and amplify it to a mainstream audience. Jay-Z wasn't really fukking with Cole like that (similarly to Kanye honestly)

No, but he's always been a rapper first and foremost. He never was trying to go beyond rap. That's why he's really in the lab for years continuing to refine and improve his lyricism.

For the record, I have been dissing Cole the most historically on this site. I literally coined the phrase "Nap King Cole" for how boring he was, it was even my username for a few

Bruh :why: So why are you disagreeing, you know exactly what I’m saying

And the difference between Kendrick’s and Cole’s is Kendrick’s was traditional BAIT. It’s a) a verse, not a song. And b) split between two people, not aimed at one

So its fine being ‘light’. No one rates ‘ask Nas he don’t want it with Hov’ as a diss. No one rates Pusha’s ‘you don’t even write your songs’ as a diss. Those are declarations of war. They are light bc they are supposed to be light

On the contrary, Cole made an entire song, 3+ minutes, a hook, a beat switch, thru in some filler bars, then STILL kept dissing :dead: That ain’t no ‘warning’ that’s just a weak diss track

Cole is definitely seen as a 'must listen' artist whenever one of his albums drop even if you're not a hardcore fan.

:dead:

Let me put it like this….you put your hand on the stove and get burnt a few times you probably gon stop touching it right? Ok then.

Cole is not must listen anymore. He is THAT basic. After 10,15 years I KNOW he ain’t got shyt to say. Even tho he’s talented

Cole is now on Eminem, Wale, Big Sean status. Rappers who I know are talented, yet I have NO motivation whatsoever to listen to their music. At ALL. And i know I ain’t the only one

Different strokes:yeshrug:

I didn't like Cole much at all until 4 Your Eyez Only, but it says something that I had already heard all his albums. It's funny to me that people consider it his worst album.

The Off-Season 1st Week Sales: 282K
Mr Morale 1st Week Sales: 295K

:mjlol:

For those saying... That Cole isn't a draw or must listen in hip-hop when he drops, why is he doing close to the same 1st week numbers as Kendrick after a 5 year hiatus?

Youtube algo fed me this video of a father and son reaction to 7 minute drill. The son was maybe in his 20s dad 50ish. But what struck me was the son only really picked up on when Cole talked about shooting and direct lines. He didn't pick up on anything else like his level of listening and understanding was bad and he just trying to get geeked up and hyped. Dad had to explain half the lyrics to him. But in that moment I understood this thread. Plus Cole dissed cacs and the grammy's so that was going to really set "hip hop heads" off.
