I think we can all agree that these are the only men who hit KING OF NEW YORK status....

Because again, Mase and Puff rode the wave of Biggie's death immediately. Biggie dies and immediately Mase blows up with Harlem world off the strength of No Way Out and Biggie's ghost. With his success in 97 that made it a legitimate toss-up especially with Jay on the rise as well. Nas was inactive in 97 untl the Firm album, which he barely did much on anyway. Use your common sense, pay attention to timelines.

Words mean things. Actually listen to them.

Then again, you're not talking in good faith.
Nobody took mase and puff serious

IWW hurt Nas to this day. He been in a uphill battle ever since

Cause of the Bad Boy machine stupid. Biggie died and by extension all eyes was on what Bad Boy was doin. Mase helped Puff carry that label that year. All the features and new Bad Boy artists was getting more shine. Biggies death helped sell the dream. Alotta nikkas in the streets felt NY was too glossy in 97. Which is why DMX and later Jay Z became big factors in the first place.
So Nas impact meant nothing then lol

With His resume there should been no debate who was next up since Big died. IWW being a letdown made it vacant

I don't know how it can be any clearer that It Was Written wasn't a let down. Double platinum in 2 months. Two top 40 singles. Nas gets big mainstream placements with Karl Kani, Sprite, etc. Award show performances. Successful tours. A success by every metric.

The only people let down by It Was Written were the people that already didn't like the guy that you think deserved KONY over him in 1996. The stretch & bobbito crowd did not fukk with Bad Boy - that's the whole fukking reason they didn't like It Was Written, because it sounded like a Biggie album in their eyes. But New York was feeling Bad Boy's sound, and by extension they were feeling It Was Written just as much as Ready to Die.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Nas first four albums got worse with each release and it started with IWW
Let's talk Jay's track record. Vol 1 wasn't better than Reasonable Doubt. Vol 2 was better than Vol 1 but worse than Reasonable Doubt. And Vol 3 was worse than all of em. Matter fact.
Illmatic >>>>>> Reasonable Doubt
IWW >>>>>>>>>>>> Vol 1
I Am >>>>>>>> Vol 3.

Thats cause Jay wasn't initially as important as Nas in the first place. There's plenty people out there who feel IWW >>> Illmatic. There's damn near nobody who feels any of them Jay albums before Blueprint is better than Reasonable Doubt.

So a unimportant Jay snatch the crown with vol 2 over Nas who was more important. I wonder why? Lol
