i look at the current dispute over democratic inaction on israel, in the midst of an election, from a utilitarian standpoint.
looking at this illustration, instead of reducing the palestinians to the lone figure, i would rather say that it represents staying the course and working on a ceasefire without being too condemnatory - in word and deed - of israel and its actions.
the group of figures is representative of initiating an arms embargo, pulling funding, and threatening israel with sanctions if it doesn’t put an immediate halt to the bombings.
there is, of course, clear moral justification for the second choice. i doubt anyone will disagree that a huge cry of relief would be heard if that happened.
but, doing so would almost certainly guarantee trump wins.
the outcome would invite untold horrors upon millions more than the entire population of palestinians. it would spell an end to any participation by the us, the world’s only superpower, in staving off the climate crisis. it would pave the way for russia to absorb multiple nations within her empire.
the pro-palestinian crowd isn’t exercising logic.
