thats life in the working world breh.

you want to be excellent at something?
thats what it is
This lol. Every job is "stressful" tho.

Wanna be good in IT? It's gonna be stressful to get those top level certs and job qualifications.

Wanna be in the medical field? Gonna be a lil stressful knowing about the human body

Hell kitchen life is stressful, service industry is stressful, customer service life can be stressful. It's all relative and a part of working

Thanks for sharing @jaydawg08 I'm too old now but my pops was begging me to try back in college.

How strong do your math skills need to be? I remember thinking I needed to be a wizard or something and psyched myself out of it :snoop:

@WTFisWallace? Good stuff on the info, everything he said is correct. I'm assuming you're a controller also.. tower or center life?
Tower?

….probably would’ve rejected the FOL if they tried to start me off with Terminal in some small southern sundown town level 7 tower.

I'm basically one of like 2 black men/women in my building. This career needs more young black men....
These the hidden jobs cacs be having that pay really well.
Flight attendants been exposed. Now this the next one. Yall better get in early before the flood gates open
Unfortunately, facts. Seems like at least 60% of the white new hires have a parent, uncle, or close family friend that were/are controllers.

My facility doesn’t have many black men…when I first started we had 1 black woman and she just transferred…so 0 now.

shyt the only reason I found out about the job, was because my cousin was dating a social worker as I was graduating high school and she put me on to game.

I will say there seems to be an uptick in latin, Asian, and somewhat Black hires.

It's all based on your test score... You could have a background working a forklift job, or even McDonald's and if you got in the higher test score band than some engineer you get the shot ahead of him/her
This is a fact. And past that once you start training….you’ll notice all the other shyt goes out the window in regards how ‘good’ you are at the job. We have Harvard graduates and scientists who while certified, struggle at times. And we got 18/19 year olds, who’s only previous job was being grocery store cashier who are pretty much the ‘best’ in the facility.

I applied months ago and almost immediately moved forward with the job process(they must've needed people badly). Took one of their practice exams and had no idea what I was doing for a part of it lol. As soon as I submitted it I got an email saying I didn't pass and that I was disqualified :sadbron:

if you meet the age requirement, and are still open to the job/relocation possibility. I would say keep applying bruh.

I didn’t get the job til my 3rd application.

Lmao.. absolutely same.

I wouldn't have accepted if I didn't get enroute. Maybe later in my career I'll try a tower, but probably not. I like the dark room too much

Apply to be an Air traffic controller. I made this thread last year, and I'm gonna keep the same info on it, just making a new thread.

MAY 5-8th!! This is when you can apply

^^This is a good website to get started on what the hiring process generally looks like, and what you can expect

Really this is the reason I joined this site. I'm basically one of like 2 black men/women in my building. This career needs more young black men.... Plus y'all can help me with my breaks and seniority lol

What is Air Traffic control?

Basically these are the people who are either in a tower, or a government building that talk to planes/pilots and give them clearances for takeoff.. clear them to land.. move them around weather.. basically make sure that everyone in the sky doesn't hit one another.

How much can I make with ATC?

Generally even a low level tower (think of a tiny airport near you) will make 100k+ with overtime and different differentials. But the real $$ is going to be made at either a bigger tower aka bigger airport... or with a Tracon or Center. These are the locations that cover all the other airspace in the US around the bigger airports. Think of when you're flying above the clouds 30,000 ft above the air, these are the people who are talking to the commercial airlines or even the GA pilots that take off from middle of now where airports. Once you are done with training, you will make 160k+ with increases in pay yearly. However even "halfway" done with training you are still making 100k+ a year because you have ratings and big raises as you progress through training.

What do I gotta do in order to get hired?

You have to input your resume on USAJobs.. and find the announcement when the days happen. To find an announcement, search for job series "2152", and make sure U.S. Citizens is marked in the "who may apply box". The job title is Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee, and the announcement number will be something like "FAA-ATO-16-ALLSRCE-49075". Note the "ALLSRCE", this indicates the "no experience" bid. The FAA also announces its internal bids on usajobs; if you SEE these, they are not hiring announcements for NEW hires.

What qualifications do I need?

You need to either have a 4 year degree.. a 2 year degree with 1-2 years full time work experience.. or 3 years full time work experience. You also need to be UNDER 31 YEARS OLD.

What happens after I apply?

You will wait for an email and set up a time for a test that you need to pass in order to get to the next step.. in this test there is basically a bunch of "games" and math problems that you need to do well on. Things like "separating multiple dots on a screen while also doing math problems".. and "memorizing 10 sets of numbers in order", etc. etc.

If you score high enough.. you then get an offer letter to go to Oklahoma City for 3-4 months (paid) for the FAA Academy where they teach you how to do the job in a smaller way. This part is actually pretty difficult. Won't sugar coat this part, but generally around 50% of the people who come here don't pass..... HOWEVER from what I've read they've done a much better job of being able to pass people on a more consistent basis, while also being able to pocket 3-4k while you're down there.

Why am I posting this on here?

I work in a Center.. and I'm at the bottom in terms of seniority. So anyone who generally wants to know more. Let me know.. I'll bump this as it gets closer.

I made this thread about a year ago last year, had one of the brahs message that he applied.. took the test.. passed it.. now has his class date to OKC for an center class in April. Dude is probably in Basics right now studying lol. Shout-out @Spiider

Hiring process can take 3-9 months depending.. every panel is different, but it's best to just apply.. go about your life.. take the test.. go about your life.. and if you tested well enough then still continue to go about your life.

Most challenging part of the process is going through the security clearance if you have anything. Tickets, or a misdemeanor will just have you having a conversation with a security officer to verify everything is okay with you.

That's a good question. Maybe it's because young people are smarter and have quicker thoughts and realizations. Older people have the experience, but physically and mentally you start to decline at around that age. I work for a big tech company that specifically hires young people because the CEO thinks they are smarter. I'm 40 and I'm the oldest person on my team.
They’re not smarter, they’re dumber. :dead: They’re easier to control/manage.

They have some pretests I believe on the pointsixtyfive website that I linked in the OP.. I don't know if the test has changed much or at all, but generally it's something that you don't "study" for.

It's a bunch of game like things that can show how fast and accurate you work. Separating dots on a screen while solving addition/multiplication problems.. remember number sequences.. knowing your left from your right lol, etc
