Universal Responds To AMC: Studio Believes In Theatrical, But Expects To Release Future Films Directly To Theatres & PVOD – Deadline

“We absolutely believe in the theatrical experience and have made no statement to the contrary. As we stated earlier, going forward, we expect to release future films directly to theaters, as well as on premium video on demand (PVOD) when that distribution outlet makes sense,” a Universal spokesman said.

Universal is trying to clear the air. I think they still NEED some of their heavy hitters in theaters, if theaters ever go back to what they were pre covid

they didn’t spend $250 million on Fast 9 to not have it in 1/3 of the theaters in the US. Way to much money to lose. And the piracy. Gonna have Blue-Ray level rips within minutes of release.

Hoe babble to the extreme. I understand where AMC is coming from, but it's not like Trolls was going to be some box office success. And I'm sure that Universal knows that they aren't going to fully profit on strictly VOD with their big budget movies. This is just AMC throwing a bytch fit to get what they want. They already have VOD on their site for rentals. I think they're the only theater chain that has that. What does that tell you about the future? COVID-19 just put things into motion way sooner than expected. I guarantee that in a couple of weeks, or however long it takes AMC and Universal to have their talks behind the scenes, and we're going to see an announcement of same day release through AMC.
