Apparently Trolls 2 made bank on VOD

Theaters about to be fukked :wow:

It only made bank because people were home and had nothing else to do. I don't believe this model is sustainable in the long-term. Going to the movies is an experience for some and one that can't be replicated at home for many (sound system, screen type, etc.). This is going to be a game of chicken. We'll see who gets out of the way first. People aren't going to be home forever and some states are already loosening guidelines and opening back up for business.

It depends, for example China hasn't been on lockdown for more than a month and yet they don't have any theaters open. And when they did for that short time period, the attendance was so low that some theaters just closed because they weren't making enough money.

i get why AMC said this but not the best move for them. maybe AMC should partner with them or get ahead of the curve and make an on-demand service for new releases. that would be money for them.

If I had kids, I would eat up watching Trolls and other first run kid movies at home. Other than that, I want the movie theater experience. Plus AMC A-list was good to me last year. I also wouldn't spend $20 to rent a film for a night. If i could buy a new release for $20, I would maybe consider it, depending on what movie it is

So you don't think McDonald's would have sponsorsed endgame because it's a VOD release?:skip:

Game Of Thrones is a home medium, the show airs without commercials, it had plenty of corporate sponsors and promotional tie ins.

Why would it be any different for VOD Endgame?

Brands’ Most Desperate Attempts to Cash In on the End of Game of Thrones, Ranked

And I don't know what Bloodshot in South Africa has to do with anything.

It would help me to understand it better if you could put in terms of math, because I'm really not understanding what's being lost in terms of profits.

Game of Thrones is a weekly program with timed slots. Consistency is key to marketing.

Sponsoring something is about getting eyeballs.

You can’t do math. That’s the problem. If marketing were an exact science, everything would get the same attention as any other movie.

The reason kids cereal is eye level in stores is cause they know kids are around a certain height and will see it.

The scary part about VOD is that consumers will have the power over when to see something. For the past 30 years, Hollywood has been pumping bigger and bigger money behind opening weekends.

if I know I can wait out 20 dollar/48 hr rentals for a month to buy for 12 bucks or steal it. Why would I?

This is similar to what happened when DVR and TIVO came. Advertising didn’t like you running past their ads or waiting a week to watch the shows.
