why do you keep mentioning missy??

Missy had a build up for her album, the single with Nas (Hot Boy) was a hit and she had the cut with the Hot Boys on her album.

Her features were everywhere in 1998, which gave her that build up for her 99 release.

You gotta factor in Missy in 99 breh, with her exposure, and only that, I'd rank her over Mia X if we keeping it 100. Just because P didn't do the whole video thing/ promo.

This is her featured run from 98 and plus the 2 singles from off her album in 99, without mentioning the cut with the Hot Boys. She has to be mentioned of the strength of these songs IMO. She had a good 98 and 99 year.

"Beep Me 911"
(featuring 702 and Magoo)

"Hit Em wit da Hee"
(featuring Lil' Kim)

"She's a bytch"

"All n My Grill"[A]
(featuring MC Solaar or Big Boi)

"Hot Boyz"

Jay and Nas popularity took a bit of a hit as 199 went on with flopping singles (Jay) or sellout notions (Nas) while DMX's popularity was as strong as 98, he was the top dog

what flopped singles did jay-z have?

"beep me 911" was way too old.

all those other singles before "hot boyz" flopped and the album was considered a commercial disappointment until that "hot boyz" song which didn't come out til 2000.

MTV News 1515 even had missy listed as one of the artists who fell flat in '99, on their year-end hip-hop special. this was of course before "hot boyz".

@mobbinfms @spliz @whoever else

aiht so, I went back and listened to the mobb deep the other night.
I can appreciate it more now, but I still don't seem myself putting this in rotation in real-time '99 and it still doesn't crack my top 10 for that year.

theres really nothing wrong with the album, but theres not much that jumps out and grabs you either.
also, side B should be side A on the tape. that would've helped matters.

I don't really count those songs from 1998, but Missy impacted in 1999. Missy was not a flop in 1999. Her album was not a flop. Every time this comes up, you never post anything to support it being a flop. "Hot Boyz" dropped in 1999.

Citing MTV would be an actual quote or link to that information.

I also gave you the show and the exact episode.
which i still have on VHS.

and im not even taking their word for it.
she was a hyped up artist who was everywhere for 3 years at this point. this was supposed to be her big follow-up and she only sold 130k out the gate in the midst of the sales-boom.
barely cracked the top 10 when the album dropped and it took 8 months to barely go plat, and only cracked that mark because of "hot boyz". AND 1999 was over by that point.

the first two singles went nowhere.
you know its bad when you make super-commercial music and your 1st two singles make no mark whatsoever.

None of what you said here is relevant because you'd have to apply this same logic to Foxy Brown. It was the same conditions for her and she did 173K out of the gate and ended up selling less albums than Missy overall.

i dont know what youre dragging foxy into this for but foxy's album was considered a flop too.

and she wasn't a pop rapper like missy and still sold better out the gate than her.

missy had to drop a remix with like 20 people, while latching onto the hot boy wave TWICE, just to get out of the flop-zone the following year.

Missy was definitely flopping with the She’s a bytch single/album. I was low key heated when the Hot Boyz Remix was a hit :russ:
I thought she was done :lolbron:

I brought up Foxy because she too was a female rapper who was everywhere. None of her singles impacted where Missy's did. And we can't use this whole Pop rapper schtick because Missy wasn't Pop. She hadn't crossed over. She sang R&B and rapped.

Missy didn't drop "Hot Boyz" twice. The remix was the single. The single doesn't even have the original on it. And LOL at the hyperbole of having 20 people on the song. It was three and for all of them, including Missy, it was the biggest song commercially for them.

And there wasn't a hot boy wave. Master P had a song titled Hot Boyz & Girls an entire year and some change before the masses were even introduced to the Hot Boys.
