I laughed at that too. Just posting it to show how the album was recieved at the time.

thats the point tho. magazine ratings don't represent how an album is received.

they automatically gave 4 mics to snoop everytime out for years.

and the album that ended heavy d got a 4 mic rating right next to snoop.

What No Limit album in 1999 was bigger than Top Dogg?

snoop's album was really no bigger than the silkk, mystikal or TRU chit.

he might've sold a lil more thanks to stat-padding off of both nostalgia and him being the west coast rap ambassador by that point. hell, those are the reasons why that was the first '99 no limit album that I purchased.

it really wasn't anymore impactful than the other jawns tho.

Snoop's album was a bigger deal than all three of them. It had nothing to do with stat-padding. Both Snoop and No Limit were declining and fans of one or both needed something to be excited about. Mystikal's album was a big deal as was Silkk's, but that was going into '99. That Spring/Summer No Limit was headed towards limbo.

That TRU album definitely wasn't a bigger deal than Top Dogg. Da Crime Family furthered the decline.

Snoop's album was an important one because he was finally being Snoop again. This album had the Dre touch that was absent on his two previous albums and less of the No Limit touch that dominated his first No Limit record. It was pivotal for No Limit because if Snoop couldn't sell, no one else on the Tank stood a chance.

the bolded sounds like some participation trophy chit.
and naw, snoop wasn't snoop again, just cuz he made a west coast record. he was still a shell of his former self, and that was the general feeling unless you were hell-bent on blindly rooting for dude to succeed.

how did da crime family further the decline?? hoody hoo was big and people messed with the album, plus the fiend & mac albums were big with the in-the-know crowd. they really didn't hit that trap door until the master p album.

That wasn't a participation trophy. Snoop's Top Dogg was a big deal. No Limit even added the "No Limit" to the title to emphasize it. Who said Snoop wasn't a shell of his former self, which made it even more important. This was his homecoming.

"Hoody Hoo" was not big. Da Crime Family was a flop. And anybody trying to prop WWIII and Street Life as big outside of people who were still hardcore No Limit fans is in denial. I say this as first day purchaser of WWIII and someone who bought Street Life in 1999.

You really had to be fan to even know about Mac's album. It didn't even have a title or legit album cover until it was advertised in the booklet for Magic's Thuggin' which dropped August 31, 1999 and Mac dropped Spetember 28. So this wasn't something that was big with the "in the know crowd" unless you were a No Limit fan.

No Limit hit the trap door before OGCJM.

They didn't give Snoop 4 mics automatically everytime out. Doggfather and Game is to be Sold... both got 3.5 IIRC. (and that was being generous, IMO)

And bringing up Heavy D is irrelevant because they didn't name Heavy D's album as one of the year's ten best like they did for Snoop's album.

All true

The ironic bizarre thing about No Limit in 99 is that all big Miller projects were not well-received and flopped hard (except Silkk in January which hit platinum), while the B and C roster (Fiend and Mac with excellent efforts, plus okay albums from Magic, Mercedes, Mo B dikk) delivered (let's forget about Lil Italy and Lil Soldiers)

Da Crime Family was the best album quality-wise from the Millers, still flopped, even though it had a minor hit (Hoody Hoo) and a great second single (Tru Homies). After very lackluster albums in the first 4 months plus the upcoming CMR, No Limit lost all its steam and was barely a factor in the second half of 99. Only Snoop went platinum (plus worldwide)

Street Life got heavy promo, I remembered saying, dayum P finally put money for promo on this album.

It debut at number 1, correct me if I am wrong but it had a high debut on the charts and I believe it was number 1

Well it did debut as the nr 1 rap album, but only nr 15 on Billboard album charts. Didn't go gold like TAOIEF.

hell even Bossalinie, Da Crime Family (double CD), Foolish and OGCJM only went gold. Only platinum albums NL had in 99 were Made Man and Top Dogg

Ruff Ryders and Cash Money were the new hip crews

"Hoody Hoo" was a minor hit. In 1999, "Down 4 N's" was minor too. "Down 4 My N's" snowballed into something bigger and ended up being a single an entire year later.
