I don't know if you understand time and how it correlates to history and influences later events but, 1916 is only 108 years ago...
Which means, some of these militia men are close descendants of natives of Darfur that were alive and fighting before 1916 and from 1916 to 1956(when the region was supposed to be independent again). So, if a group is conscious that they have existed with their own centralized and independent states, since Tunjur era, in early 1400s, then they won't solely define themselves based on the past 108 years. They will want to have their own states again. It is like this everywhere.
