I double majored in Undergrad and got an MBA ith a focusin economics, strictly for the money. I never really cared about science, math, or economics, but I knew I'd get paid off them. It was hard, stressful, and took a lot of investment. And when you bombard an 18-20 year old with images of other 18-24 year olds getting rich off rapping, playing ball and pushing dope(or stripping and being promiscuous), that college kid who's broke and stressed is going to look at himself/herself and maybe have some self esteem issues. Easy majors leave more time for college kids to have fun and screw around, which is what they've been marketed to be conditioned to do.

I picked hard shyt in college and suffered, and AS SOON as I finished school, I made up for allll of it, while the people that were turned up off easy shyt are pinching pennies and looking for a savior. That's across all racial lines.

That job hunt discrimination aspect after getting the degree is the 800lb gorilla in the room though, but we goin to act like its a ghost?

Econ is the GOAT degree.

Prepares you for the Econ field (obviously) but, gives you the choice to lateral over to Finance, Accounting, Consulting, Government/Non-Profit or Law.

I was brought up to chase my dreams, not dollar signs. :yeshrug:

:salute:Same here. Self fulfillment/happiness in the field I choose/chose is very important to me. I do what I want to do! There's other factors that go into unemployment. If you've been unemployed for a certain amount of time (like I me) it becomes harder to get a job. I was told because I was sick for so long I was no longer employable. Plus picking a STEM field was not my thing. I struggled with mathematics as a little girl and I was not going to embarrass myself for the hell of it because those fields provided "top dollars". I would tell anyone to follow what's in your heart. You don't want to be 70 years old regretting life and wish you followed your own career path and not let folks talk in your ear.

That's not completely true. I know for a fact that people with H-1B visas make bank. I saw a job listed the other day in the break room for like $125k for H-1B holders. The hustle is all income from the US is taxed like they are a citizen, but because they aren't, the only thing that they can get is SS after like 10 years I believe.
THey don't make money like US folks, mainly because with H1s you don't have to pay them insurance or healthcare under obama mandate, so its cheaper.
fukked up but thats the way it is.

I don't think it's really about "hard" or "easier" majors, although I understand the lack of preparation in certain fields certainly plays a part....but from what I've noticed is that...

Blacks tend to pick more "secure" majors from what I've experienced as College Adviser.

Majors like Social Work, Nursing, Teaching, Social Sciences, Business etc were generally thought of as instant employment with guaranteed benefits. Although I rarely saw blacks enter fields in Math & Science, I ALSO rarely saw them take on majors such as Philosophy, Astronomy, or anything that didn't result with tangible recognizable skills on a resume.

Philosophy IMO IS not an "easy" major at all but it doesn't exactly fall into the query of being a "hard science" that requires strong math and science skills...BUT i can't imagine most blacks on first observation seeing any practical use for it...nor could I imagine a black 18 year old explaining to his 2 parents (who may not have even gone to college) why they were taking up such a major.

BTW everything that I've mentioned rings true with Hispanics as well.

Generally at face value, Blacks and Hispanics choose majors based on employment prospects.

The Same predicament I am in. I have what some may deem pointless degrees, but I got them not to get a job, but to acquire the knowledge that I will use for my own ventures. Hopefully, this settlement pays out well so I can really jump start everything.

I hope everything you want works out for you hun! My story was different.

I wasn't allowed to go off to college when I graduated years ago; my only option was community college (mother's choice). I got severely depressed and quit. Borderline suicidal. I went to work and almost had a stroke at 22 years old in 2008, which I quit work at age 23. 2 years later ended up with gallbladder disease and had it removed in 2011. Started taking classes online in Finance. A year later dad passed which got me in a deeper depression and I got sicker which caused my relapse in health.

Started looking for work with people telling me "you've been unemployed too long I can't hire you you're useless" or once they ask for an explanation, they'd tell me "you're a liar you practiced that", and then I would just get up and leave. I only started back taking classes because of what I want in the future but I've always wanted to get into entertainment and the sports industry as well as running my own businesses. There are some bigger things I want in the future in my late 40s and early 50s, which is why I want the degree but to do music I really don't need to.

I've always lived at home and my older sisters never moved out until marriage (they're old fashioned but I don't want to wait on a man to take me out you know?) so having a place to stay is no issue for me. I can just work on my goals/dreams.

I would tell anyone to follow what you want and not follow the crowd, I don't care how much money is in it. If you enjoy what you do then dammit do it! Not everyone wants to be an Oncologist or Cardiac Surgeon.

A lot of gems in here

End of the day a lot of blacks and latinos had no guidance growing up

Especially when it came to academics

Parents and elders just threw a bunch of clichés at us :mjlol:

It is what it is

Sad part is you have to feel fortunate that shyt at least you ain't in jail and don't have a criminal record

Like that's an accomplishment lol

A dude like me is fukked up in the game because I make too much money to qualify for these affordable housing lotteries in NY but I don't make enough money to afford a market rate decent rental

So I've become a transient New Yorker and it sucks lol

Good news is I have enough experience in my "field" now to make more money somewhere else

What I would give to do it all over again knowing what I know now

I feel bad for little sis because she might be in the same boat as me soon and she was a way better student than I was as a kid but her passion was always in drawing etc

On a side note how come the people on here that claim to be self employed never want to reveal what it is they do lol

which is why i chose engineering, i can't sit down and right a paper but i know i can sit down and solve equations :yeshrug:

You did that on purpose?

There are some engineering jobs where you have to deal more with politics than actual engineering. Like doing a presentation to potential investors, writing documentation, etc.

Because most of them are fronting for popular discussion.
There have been Coli brehs that have come through with receipts.
The majority don't though.
