what type of engineering?
electrical
You did that on purpose?

There are some engineering jobs where you have to deal more with politics than actual engineering. Like doing a presentation to potential investors, writing documentation, etc.
:troll::lolbron:

i know but that's more high level stuff and project management, they usually make all the entry level guys do all the grunt work

Because math and science is "hard" and people always encourage them to do what they love. News flash 90% of degrees are worthless. This especially applies to women, they choose the shyttiest majors by far.

I used to think this but it's really not the issue. It's hard for everybody, even the ones who are great at it.

If I had to say from me and my peers college experience; it's a tie between two things.

1) black kids are going to college like myself without a clue of what they are passionate about or want to do. Mainly because they weren't exposed to anything about college growing up. Even in suburb areas.

2) most don't have the gpa to get in those fields. At least not right out of high school. Even then with years or work, at any decent college, one bad semester can completely elimate that major choice for good. Where I'm at, you fail a couple classes and get a couple c's and you will never get into engineering or most stem

Not to mention most college students are young, and don't have the mental capacity to recognize how important the whole college experience is until it's too late. That has to be developed and nurtured in a student well before they get to college.

Elaborate?

Na still on the path your on my brother. I was born into this shyt. Its alot of responsibility being on top. I dont have much now but Im happier and free as I ever been. Alot of lost friendships and seen dreams ruined over the green piece of paper. I lost good friends over the game:wow:Money doesn't change people. It just reveals their true self. You dont want the responsibility of the streets waiting on you to eat. Trust me. When you make 20k-30k a month thats basically what it is. You have to spread your hustle and show love or risk getting robbed. Then when you get so big in the game your mexican connect doesn't want your cash anymore. They want to front you work and you cant say no. So know your high priced slave. But best advice that I can give is go to college for the experience. You're only 18-22 once. Why not delay adulthood and meet some new people and learn things. Get the experience in your field of choice. Establish your network. Stack your bread then bounce . Do your own thing. I wish I had half of what you guys had growing up. My dad was a hustler/landscaping business owner but in the most important time in my life (15-19) he got strung out on dope so I had no guidance. I was just lost. My ex girl was in med school and she would feel bad for me and tell me I was one of the smartest people she met. And under different circumstances I would be a lawyer, doctor, or whatever. But fukk it I made choices. Not trying to derail thread you just took me down memory lane for a sec :pachaha:

life is too short to major in some shyt you don't care about.

stuff i learned in social sciences is far more valuable and applicable to everyday life than any shyt STEM majors pick up. look at STEM majors try and discuss social issues or politics on here. half the time they are absolutely clueless. :yeshrug:
Is it far more lucrative though, that's the end all be all for better or worse

Hell
Well you won't be wiping asses as an RN (or anything higher). Those are Nurse Assistants.

Side note: It's funny to me how annoyed RNs get when CNAs call themselves nurses, lol.

Lpns wipe asses? I wast thinking about taking that.

I'm old though.

STEM nerds in 4 3 2 1 :russell:

:umad:

My bachelors in Computer Engineering is worth more than my brother's masters :dead:

People need to stop going to college unless they have an ironclad plan. Its too much money and takes too many years to just get some bullshyt major and start wondering what you did with your life :damn:

Honesty time.
I was a STEM major (graduated in December) and tbh, unless you majored in Engineering, hell even a specific type of engineering, you are NOT going to be making 60K+ straight away. I majored in MCDB (molecular, cellular, and developmental biology) with a minor in physics. At most, even with my experience, I stand to make around 30-35K as a lab tech (stepping stone for me to pay off loans before grad school. smh). If you have less experience, you'll mak around 25-30K. The salary doesn't even really get any better because most Masters programs don't pay you and your stipend for a PhD program will prob only be around 30K. Those of us in STEM that are non-engineering majors pretty much have to keep going to school just to distinguish ourselves from other STEM folks. How the hell do you live comfortably on 25K esp when you hit your late twenties?

Don't even get me started on Academia vs. Industry. I love research but you mean to tell me that as a Senior Microbiologist I'd have a better chance making 100K+ working for the NIH and only 60K for a University. Now, if I were to get a Masters with a certain level of experience, I could make around 75K. How does that work?

STEM is such a double edged field. Most us will probably be giving half of our salaries back due to loans.

You really have to be in it because you love it.

Tbh, I find that a lot of Black students get discouraged from pursuing this field. Note, a lot of us just might not be interested in STEM which is TOTALLY fine. Lots of successful Black folk in business, the arts, english, social studies, etc. We need to stop short changing those fields. A lot of us do get turned away. My sophomore year, I wanted to declare and this dumb white hoe told me I wasn't a "top student" with a 3.6 even though I def qualified for the Honors Program. She really fukked up my confidence and I almost switched to something easier because of it. My friend had a counselor take the pen out of her hand while signing and told her to pick something else. A lot of non-Blacks don't want us in these harder fields and will do some slimy shyt to prevent it from happening.
I agree with you on this one. One thing my job has taught me is that science degrees are useless unless you plan on going to med school. The maximum starting salary for a lab tech is around 42k and that's at the sr level. If you're fresh out of college with no job experience, you'll probably be making around 27k. I even have scientists with Ph.D.'s making 80k/year.:snoop:
