Bring up Rondo's playoff numbers because no defense on the planet game plans to stop Rondo from scoring.
If a Rondo led team beats you because he channeled Steph Curry, a coach will live with that because it's an anomaly. It's like DeAndre Jordan started knocking down 3s after you shut down Paul and Griffin.
Then there must've been a lot of anomalies taking places because Rondo has repeatedly shown that he can score in regular season games and in playoffs.
Put any top ten PG on those championship Celtics and they still win just like you could put any PG on the championship Heat and they'd win.
Not necessarily. Best PGs in 2007-08:
Jason Kidd, probably. He and Rondo share the similar playing styles, if not identical.
Tony Parker, possibly.
Chauncey Billups, possibly.
Steve Nash, no. He would've been too much of a defensive liability. Mike Bibby, Chauncey Billups, and even Derek Fisher would've had career playoff games against him.
Chris Paul, no. With David West (20ppg/9rpg/1bpg; all-star), Tyson Chandler (12ppg/12ppg/1bpg), Peja Stojakovic (16ppg/4rpg, 44% from 3) and Birdman (defensive specialist), he couldn't get past the 2nd round. Plus, he would take too many touches (dribble-dribble) away from the Big 3 and would've disrupted the chemistry of the Big 3.
Baron Davis, nope.
Deron Williams, nope.
Outside of Kidd, Parker, and (maybe) Billups, I'd say you're wrong. You have to realize that Rondo's main priority during that run was to be a playmaker and play defense. Rondo was the PERFECT fit for that team. People severely underrate the difficulty of Rondo's job to run point for that team.
Rondo is a good player, he's not elite. He doesn't lead his team to good offenses. CP3 is 10x the player he is and you put any version CP3 on those Celtics and they win every year.
Rondo is elite, when healthy. His lack of scoring doesn't diminish that fact. He's one of the best--if not the best--playmakers in the game. His defense has been recognized as one of the best at the PG position. He's a walking triple-double threat. And he's led his team deep in the playoffs multiple times.
CP3 is a better scorer no doubt. And he's having a better season than Rondo for sure. But I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that CP3 would've won the championship with the 08 Celtics. How about he make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs first? How about he lead Blake, De'Andre, JJ Reddikk, Jamal Crawford to the finals before we praise him like he's a basketball gawd?
