The Japanese must have a different definition of depressing because I've seen 7 of those and I wouldn't really call any of them depressing. I could see why someone would say some of them like Attack on Titan but it still feels like a weird choices.

Re:Zero, Higurashi and Madoka Magika aren't really depressing tone wise, but each series has a character that goes through loops, dying over and over again which is a depressing situation so I can see those I guess but if that's the case might as well add Steins Gate

Texhnoylze is by far the most bleakest series. 22 episodes of nothing but nihilism, depression and false hope. . Nothing was the same after watching this show.

Gundam Seed Director Mitsuo Fukuda Confirms Film Is Sequel to Destiny

I don't see an issue. I'd rather it be that than a midquel or interquel. The real issue is the writer of Gundam SEED died in 2016. The director is back but this is somebody else's work now as other people messed with it.
