What I want to know from people like Cornell and in this thread is...

Do y'all want something rhetorical or something tangible from Obama?

Because he can go out there and do the rhetorical stuff no problem: giving speeches/interviews about black issues, play "bully pulpit", pound desks, visit all the hoods etc etc. Is that what folks want???

Because basic civics 101 shows that getting anything tangible mostly lies with CONGRESS and not the presidency. And its guaranteed that any massive changes will get watered down once it gets through the meat grind of that place...so why not take the incremental gains and keep moving and fighting, instead of bytching and complaining.

Why can't intelligent people like Cornell West understand that simple fact about American Civics? :dwillhuh:

I lost a lot of respect for West, and here's why. For a dude that has stood for uplifting black people for so long, he doesn't seem to make the same sacrifices that he asks us to make (correct me if I'm wrong). Like someone else said, he teaches at one of the most prestigious and expensive colleges in the nation. If the president has to cater to the black agenda, why doesn't Cornell West teach at a HBCU? They need help. It would bring a lot of attention to the school right?
But the biggest problem I have with West and his minions is the name calling. These are supposed to be intelligent dudes. I don't mind them being critical of the president, that's fine, but this isn't the first time he's called him out for not being black enough, or brought up his race with negative connotations. Why can't he just say he doesnt like his policies, or whateverthefukk?
It's like whatever level of success we achieve as black people, we always have that crab in a barrel syndrome. Barack walked into a literal shyt storm. There was so much that needed to be done.He did put in place (or tried to) legislation to help a wide array of people, so we can't knitpick him for not directly passing a black folks bill.
Something else that someone said that hold true, why isn't he touring black cities and talking to black youth and adults to help them move forward? Other than speaking and giving classes to rich folks, what exactly has he done to help anyone?

and yes I know about the Poverty tour.

I know Obama is not a magician and does not possess a magic wand for black folk. haha But what I do want from him and from ANY prez is to not just reform, but dead the current prison/judicial system to help brothas who are permanately locked out of any positon to be not only economically viable in this country, but be a regular member of society and not reduced to second class citizenship status forever. But I know that wouldnt happen because prisons are profiting billions. That's just my wishful thinking. lol

I actually read that proposal in Cali a few days ago....it's softened the blows from the law which previously existed, but that shyt is STILL harsh and still lays out a trap for dudes. Does it remedy the tens of thousands of men who already felt it's wrath before last week election? A lot of collateral damage has been done. If I can recall, 24 states still have the law in some shape or form. And I think Obama did reform the Rockefeller drug laws. While it used to times 100 times the amout of cocaine than crack to get the same sentence....it now 19 times. It should be 1 to 1.

How is it harsh when the third offense has to be an extreme offense? How about the fact that it may apply retroactively and a lot of people will now be able to challenge the sentences? How about voting in state and local elections see how the Democrat party is about to have a supermajority in California and that's the best way to get this stuff through? Now people in California have no excuse.

This is the problem people expect Obama to come in and automatically unravel generations of policy. I keep waiting on someone to point out the type of bill that they want and directed at what. No one does. The states have always been the laboratories of Democracy. Furthermore, Obama has a Republican House of Representatives. So you want him to expel political capital on losing propositions right now?

This is my point, people can point to problems but have no idea about how to go about fixing them. That's why these things should be dealt with at the state level first where people are closest to the problems. But cats never show up for those.

the rockefeller laws and the crack-cocaine disparity were reduced significantly
stop and frisk is a local law that obama has no control over and three strikes is a state law in cali that was just modified last week

if anybody has been paying attention the justice dept has been getting agreements with local police depts over civil rights issues all over the country

in other words most of what you mentioned has been addressed or is being addressed or has nothing to do with the federal govt

if anything what you posted shows the importance of voting in local elections

but as to the larger issue/question, this is why i have a problem with "progressivsim" its putting out this notion that the only thing standing between black people and prosperity is government policy, which IMO is not true

you can't have black prosperity without dealing with black culture, obama should focus on changing black culture, you can have a war on poverty and eliminate the so called prison industrial complex and have a "progressive" president and i can bet you that black people's economic problems would not end, because the culture that causes those things would still exist

Cocaine/crack disparity was reduced from 15:1 to 3:1, but it only applies to NEW cases going forward, therefore the hundreds of thousands of blacks in jail for nonviolent drug offenses is still high. Obama has been an abject failure for the black community and I think even Obama realizes this. Blacks have the HIGHEST unemployment, poverty levels, and dysfunction than they've ever had yet black people still :cape: for the man in droves. Obama continually shuns black organizations and black functions out of fear or appearing or sounding "too" black and yet nikkas still cape for him in droves. Obama literally went to Africa and shyt on black Africans, blaming them for all the ills that affect their nations, and yet nikkas still cape for him in droves. The dude could literally come out and say "fukk all nikkas and they mommas" and people will still :cape: for him.

Its clear Obama doesn't care about black people.

I'll bet $10 that both Sasha and Melia will marry cacs due to this blackface republican whitewashing the fukk out of his daughters

Whatever. If Cornell taught at an HBCU and criticized Obama no one would give a fukk about what he had to say. And when I say no one I specifically mean white people. And since white people wouldn't care, blacks wouldn't care as well. The only reason West has a platform is BECAUSE is teaches at one of the most respected institutions of higher learning in the country. Don't you think there are professors at black colleges or African American studies professors that are critical of Obama? Here's an example:

Online and off, African American Studies professors criticize president - The Daily Princetonian

Any person with a modicum of knowledge of history of the civil rights movement can see that Obama possesses NONE of the virtues and values that great civil rights leaders have stood for. So please save your "disdain" of West for characters more deserving of derision.....like OBAMA.

Actually it did apply retroactively Crack Cocaine Penalty Reduction Made Retroactive - TalkLeft: The Politics Of Crime

But I don't care either way, i don't really believe in the prison industrial complex theory, I believe that the justice system is biased, but fundemantally most black people in jail are in there for breaking the law and committing crimes against black people and destroying black neighborhoods, so I don't see light sentencing as a solution

I see changing black culture as a solution, which has to come internally, I think Obama should tour more as somebody said but black issues come down to black culture, but I don't think it matters how "progressive" he is, that is not what will change things

Like Don't Ask Don't Tell and Healthcare?

:aicmon:

What do people showing up for local elections have to do with federal drug laws?

You keep shifting the argument to whatever position that allows you to take a rhetorical bullet for the president and his apathy toward the most commited part of his base...

You sayin "people can point to problems but have no idea how to fix them" is a cop out...Why do you think we have leadership and elected officials?

You seem to want to hold Coli posters to a higher standard than this nations leadership...

I'm not even saying that he has failed completely and write him off because he still has another 4 years...

But I'm not gonna give him a pass that I wouldn't give to any other elected official just because he looks like me....

Maybe Black people just need better lobbyists....Because the unions, the gays and the latinos are gettin their wish lists filled

i think reducing sentencing is fine, but lets look at it another way, the people that are in in federal prison that are black are mostly selfish people who put their material wants ahead of the needs of the black community, these are people who have shown that they don't give a fuk about the black community and have willingly participated in the destruction of the black community, so in all this prison industrial complex theory stuff we need to also discuss the culture that glorifies destructive behavior

We don't need to administer modern slavery while having this discussion... We can discuss the glorification of drug culture with our brothers on Capitol Hill just as well as we can with them locked in cages...One thing has nothing to do with the other...
