@theworldismine13 That's the illusion of the "so called" prison industrial complex. It looks colorblind, but it's not. Studies show blacks are no more likely to use or sell illegal drugs (which is the number one reason we end up in prison. less than 10% of inmates are violent offenders) than whites. However, blacks are targeted and we end up outnumbering whites in prison. That isn't odd to some of yall?

I've read 1 out 3 black men nationally can expect to serve time. With them being labeled as felons, not only does the stigma of being a felon come, but they are literally locked out the economy. I'm not surprised they go right back in prison.

Unemployment went up to 30 year highs for EVERYBODY. naturally those at the bottom's problems will be magnified.

Plenty of things were not mentioned, he didn't mention white people unemployment either

Why bring up his failures while trying to be reelected?

You need a piece of legislation to fix the problems. What should Obama propose?

Obama isn't a legislature either

Yes it does take away from the truth in his message, he used the term to get arttention, and it worked, but all the attention will be on what he called the president not his overall point.

That's a choice each individual has to make for themselves...I personally prefer to see the forest for the trees...

See I'm with you there brother... No we're having some real talk...I'm just puzzled why your ability for showing tough love and calling a spade a spade is so inconsistent....

Take that same critical thought and brutal honesty about a leader who's core constituency is suffering under an unemployment double the national average for whites and peaked to almost a 30 year high under his leadership...

Then add that to the the context of us having just gone through 4 national debates and an acceptance speech without having any of this mentioned ONCE....

Israel was talked about extensively but not one mention of Chicago (and the LEADER is from there)

You don't need a piece of legislation to see that's all types of fukked up....Unless you just want to put on the blinders and say "He's not the president of Black America" (not accusing you of this specifically)...

The reason I use vague terms is because I'm an accountant not a legislature...Perhaps your legal mind is forcing you to overlook the humanity in this situation...

So what Dr. West's Black Face comment was a "fukk you too nikka" to the president?... It still doesn't take away the truth in it...

:manny:

All right, I hear you. It's just this, my mind is trained to try to solve problems. But I first must know what the problem is and how it functions. A lot of the problems we're talking about, I don't know if there is a legislative solution to them. At least not one that will come down from the federal government, who is too far away to say the myriad ways in which states have implemented structures that affect African-Americans. It's not that I don't think about this stuff, I just don't know where to start.

I think your stats are way off and all It shows is that there should be more white people in jail, I don't really consider people in jail to be victims per se

at the end of the day these are people that are ruining black neighborhoods and putting their wants above the needs of the black community and most of the crime is committed against black people

Again I'm all for prison reform and all that but I'm not down in encouraging a culture where selling drugs and participating in criminal activities is considered normal and acceptable, I would be really outraged if innocent people where being put in jail but these aren't innocent people , the vast majority are guilty as charged

Fam, you and me both. lol I think it comes down to economics. fukk this "recession", black folk have BEEN in one for the longest. When America catches a cold, black folk get pneumonia. haha We have a buying power of over 1.1 trillion. But we dont own anything. That money continuously goes out of our community and does not circulate within it. I think if we created and ran our own industries, manufactured our own products and goods, provided our own services and spearheaded our own educational system which focused on being producers instead of consumers, then an infrastructure would be in place, we wouldnt need legislature to get us out of the conditions we're in. Yea, I know it's a pipe dream. But it starts with changing our mentality - which I think is the hardest part.

You know what I've always wanted to read a study or a book on? When African-Americans became anti-intellectual. That's the one thing none of my African-American studies class or discussions with old heads never covered. At what point did the people who were willing to undergo racist and death threats for the right to a better education lose that fervor? I don't know when that happened.

But not at an equal rate depending on ethnicity and economic background...If you don't give a fukk about that and think they're just getting what they deserve, than cool....I don't feel that way...

I believe the punishment should fit the crime..And you can't justify or rationalize to me how a non violent drug offender deserves to serve 90% on a 10 year federal drug charge for giving another adult a substance they willingly chooses to put in their own body....

im 100 percent behind prison reform, but i disagree that that is the real problem, the real problem is that a segment of the black population thinks its acceptable to sell an illegal substance and lives in a culture that encourages or doesn't really condemn such behavior

if all you are saying is that people need to be freed i dont think you grasp the whole problem or have a real solution

when a black youth sells an adult a substance he is ruining the economics of the community and is putting his/her wants above the needs of the community, if they are actually guilty as charged i disagree that people in jail are simply victims, its deeper than that

im very bothered by the "prison industrial complex" formulation because it encourages this "hey the big homie is back, lets have a barbecue and it will be like the good old days" type of attitude, where it doesnt really put pressure on people to change, for the most part people in jail are people that contribute to the destruction of black neighborhoods

I'm always up for an objective, provocative discussion of Barack Obama; I'm not up for hearing Cornel West's initiating nor mediating such a discussion. This nikka is an integrity-less goof, period. Tell that fukk nikka to cut a little off the top, get another grad student pregnant, and publish some scholarship of actual worth to try and blunt his complete sacrifice of AFAM studies at the altar of his insecurity and ego.

I'd smack this nikka in his fukking face in a one-on-one meeting. He disgusts me.

wait, what?

Black neighborhoods are patrolled more then college campuses for narcotics. If you're looking for someone doing something wrong, all you gotta do is look hard.

Here's the study/report where I got the stats from fam. Their findings are from the horse's mouth - the FBI. US: Drug Arrests Skewed by Race | Human Rights Watch

I think about that too. I think it in the 70s. The riots popped off all over the nation - and nothing happened as a result. Malcolm and Dr. King, were murdered. Stokely went in to exile. The black panther movement got phased out. Damn near all our leaders were killed, locked up or silenced. I think that sent a subconscious message to say that any resistance to uplift your people will be stomped out. I think that deflated a lot of confidence in the movement which focused on education, social awareness, and most importantly black pride. Maybe the psyche was, "no matter how hard we try, we're not gonna make it". I think a lot said, fukk it, black intellectualism aint paying the bills. I'm just doing for self now, I'm not risking my life on a losing battle. To me, it snowballed into institutionalizing these low expectations we've been told we were destined for.

I lost a lot of respect for West, and here's why. For a dude that has stood for uplifting black people for so long, he doesn't seem to make the same sacrifices that he asks us to make (correct me if I'm wrong). Like someone else said, he teaches at one of the most prestigious and expensive colleges in the nation. If the president has to cater to the black agenda, why doesn't Cornell West teach at a HBCU? They need help. It would bring a lot of attention to the school right?
But the biggest problem I have with West and his minions is the name calling. These are supposed to be intelligent dudes. I don't mind them being critical of the president, that's fine, but this isn't the first time he's called him out for not being black enough, or brought up his race with negative connotations. Why can't he just say he doesnt like his policies, or whateverthefukk?
It's like whatever level of success we achieve as black people, we always have that crab in a barrel syndrome. Barack walked into a literal shyt storm. There was so much that needed to be done.He did put in place (or tried to) legislation to help a wide array of people, so we can't knitpick him for not directly passing a black folks bill.
Something else that someone said that hold true, why isn't he touring black cities and talking to black youth and adults to help them move forward? Other than speaking and giving classes to rich folks, what exactly has he done to help anyone?

and yes I know about the Poverty tour.
Al Sharpton sonned him on this topic before. He told Cornell how he was out there fighting the fight and asked him what he was doing. Cornell had no response.

Cornell was admiring from his house in the hills playing revolutionary as the only black kid at his school probably around a bunch of white kids who were easily intimidated. According to his Wiki his dad worked for the defense department. He probably berrated his poor father about working for the man with his antics as a malcom x wannabe before going onto become the pupil of a cac philosopher at Harvard. :heh:

well speaking of federal drug laws, wasn't Obama involved in the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010? I know it wasn't all some of us (including myself) wanted it to be. but reducing the crack:cocaine discrepancy from 100:1 to 18:1 is something
