It's that condescending, "everyone ain't nerds like y'all" attitude you see prevalent on here but the irony is that it shows that they are more out of touch with the masses than we are.

To be fair, the character of Carol Danvers was created in the 60s-70s; she went by Ms Marvel then.
she was a side character who was later killed off for over a decade.
And Technically Monica Rambeo was introduced and Ms marvel/ captain marvel before she was anyway. Yet they decided the make carol the first incarnation in the MCU.

Just gonna leave this here. Animated Spiderman, and X-men from the 90s. Two huge shows that had these characters show up and kick ass. There’s a reason these big studios bought out the IPs.

Marvel v Capcom all these guys were beloved. People KNOW them despite how y’all feel, you’re wrong.

Not even getting into Daredevil, Frank Castle, etc…street level guys that have big pull in universe that the public knows and can identify even if they aren’t huge nerds. Y’all just don’t realize how influential Marvel has been over the decades.

Super hero movies are kids movies. Why should they cater to grown men?
30+ year old males are the main superhero comic readers. That's why you see so much anger in that space online because Marvel or DC is trying to branch out and women, children, gay, and multi cultural readers. That reader base they are trying to gain fukk with manga, and I don't blame them.

Everyone knew/knows about Black Panther, Thor and Iron Man, that’s cap. Those are Marvel big hitters. Each have appeared on animated shows since the 90s (really for decades earlier as well). I feel like y’all really underestimate the draw these characters have outside of the comic book medium.
Black Panther wasn't known outside of the comic readers.

This is patently false. I mean, I can appreciate you saying people don’t know about his feats and backstory…but to say he wasn’t known at all is not true.

That link has all his non comic appearances before the movies. I wouldn’t expect a non physicist to know about Hawkings’ papers but I bet they know what black holes are.

These characters were not limited to comics alone. They are pop culture icons. Stop this narrative. It’s like not everyone watches the NBA or plays basketball but I bet they’ve at least heard of Michael Jordan

For sure. I just mean her current version. For years she was just known as the chick that got soul clapped by Rogue, till marvel tried to slap a new coat of paint on her 10 years ago.

Too true. But Carol as Captain Marvel definitely had a huge impact in the comics, so her appearing in the films and getting a movie wasn't a strange choice.

They started pushing Carol as Ms. Marvel during Civil War, and they were just sitting on the "Captain Marvel" trademark, not doing shït with it (except a Mar-Vell fake-out during Secret Invasion.) They definitely weren't gonna bring back Mar-Vell, Genis-Vell went completely insane, and Monica Rambeau/Photon/Spectrum had basically moved past the moniker. Promoting Carol to Captain Marvel--at the very least to hang on to the trademark--was kind of a no-brainer.

Ms. Marvel is just not a well known character. You cannot compare the success of this movie to the Avengers movies with Iron Ma,, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Spider-Man too (arguably the 3rd most popular super hero character behind Super-Man and Batman). And what is even the story-line now? Whatever it is it's not on the level of Thanos and the Infinity Stones.

Only way they get back to that level is with the X-Men. Don't fukk it up Marvel.

:russ: Nobody’s saying that those characters weren’t out there. People who was reading the comics, watching the cartoons, or playing the games you was in the know. The people outside of them spaces most definitely didn’t know who the black panther was. Before the mcu the only marvel characters that the mainstream knew by hard was Wolverine, Hulk, and Spider-Man lol.

:mjlol: You just proved my point

None of the X-men are really built for solo movies though, since they were conceived as a team and built up that way from the jump. So it doesn’t really make sense to hold that as a knock against only Cyclops.

The solo movie approach worked with Avengers because all of those characters started off with their own comics, rogues galleries, and storylines before they became Avengers.
