And the story that everyone was following is done. People were able to forgive or ignore the meh quality of most of the films because they were invested in the overarching story. The quality is the same as it has always been. I would argue that the D+ shows have been better and closer to representing the tone of the comics than the movies.

He had a similar farewell sequence/speech at the end of Age Of Ultron. That's when the "Will RDJ return?" rumors were circulating for months and nikkas was when he popped up in the Civil War trailer

Higher quality than what when it first started? Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America were good movies but I wouldn't say they were higher quality than other action blockbusters at the time. I remember feeling that Avengers was a step back the more I watched it (saw it 3 times in the theater).

He was costing them a ton.

IIRC RDJ has a deal where he gets profit points on the MCU Iron Man and Avengers movies as well as a base salary of 20 million. Think how much those movies made and what Disney would have to pay him from the profits. He apparently made over 475 million off those movies. His salary for the first Ironman was 2.5 million

Imagine what they'd have to pay to get him back probably the same deal. Base salary and backend points from profits.

RDJ also essentially forced Disney to pay his Avengers costars higher salaries after the success of the first movie

Oh yeah I remember that but he walked it back to no more solo Iron Man movies because he (in his words) was getting too old to be carrying an action movie.

But regardless of his opinion, Marvel wanted him gone from like...."Iron Man 2", if I remember correctly.

I would say that why Winter Soldier turned out so well because they took the core of 3 Days of the Condor (one of my favorite movies) and gave it the Ed Brubaker's Captain America: Winter Soldier wrapping.

As I have mentioned numerous times in TFR for years; Winter Soldier is the best MCU movie by a mile. You can take out all of the comic book influence and it would still be a quality film.

My girl wants to see because she loves black superheroes, so I'll probably end up seeing with her only if we go to Alamo Drafthouse to see it.

But with the streak that the MCU have been on, who didn't see to coming and that Variety article and the Blade news doesn't help whatsoever
