It was going down before that from what I can tell. Also there were concerted efforts by community and local governments to promote sex education/family planning services etc. which should not be discounted. Providing birth easy access to birth control is going to have a more direct impact on unwanted pregnancy than welfare imo. I really doubt teens are thinking "Its ok to have unprotected sex, the govt. will pick up the bill." They're most likely not thinking much about the long term consequences of their actions at all.

nah the teenage pregnancy rate started going down during the 2000's when welfare reform went into full effect, i do think it had an impact, i do think some teens do think having a kid is not that big a deal because they know they can get benefits, i actually do think being aware that welfare had limits figured in mental calculations

but i think its just one factor, birth control and knowledge had to do with it to also

You saw what you wanted with that quote. I didnt state women are having more kids. I stated they are having kids with no worries of being able to properly raise them. How can you get having kids with no worries to having a lot of kids?.

Also, its not just about teen pregnancy its women in their twenties also. Welfare basically helped fuel the rise in the single parent.

1.That's a leap based on nothing more than opinion.
2. The rate is basically irrelevant when considering how its skewed by other factors (marriage rate, overall birth rate). The gross number is more important and that number is falling.

didn't see the 1980 numbers, can you link to the specific data?

Also from http://datacenter.kidscount.org/dat...867,133,38,35,18/10,168,9,12,1,13,185/432,431:

Definitions: Children under age 18 who live with their own single parent either in a family or subfamily.
In this definition, single-parent families may include cohabiting couples and do not include children living with married stepparents.
Thats why I agreed it doesnt "pass muster"... but the numbers could fall on either side :manny:

lol. come on breh. kids aren't thinking about long term consequences. That's part of being a teenager. Now I'm not going to sit here and say no kids are/were thinking welfare will take care of everything, but to try and paint them as the majority?:comeon: Education is probably the biggest factor in all of this: http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/FB-ATSRH.html

The use of contraceptives during first sex by females aged 15–19 has increased, from 48% in 1982 to 78% in 2006–2010

I can agree its opinion but since no one cared to do studies on it, I will use my common sense by seeing what older people have told me, and studying the past. Also, by looking at how chicks were. I was around in the 80's and 90's and remember chicks getting on welfare easily even though they knew they should stop fukking with certain men and get their life together. Yeah, they didnt like being on it but at least they had food and shelter. It helped them not take resposibility. This is based on seeing the drastic change from being young in the 80's and watching older women to getting older and watching my peers, then listening to the reasons from older people opposed to the reasons from younger people.

Because it was harder and more of a stigma. Im telling you it wasnt like that at one point in time, at least not to the extremes it started to become in the 90's. once kids started cracking jokes about it and crackhead was sononymous with welfare shyt was extremely a negative but some still do it, but in shame.

all i said is that i think it was a factor, the increased used of contraceptives doesnt contradict that point, and its actually contradicting your point, teenagers are obviously thinking about long term consequences if they are using contraception, and it just shows kids increasingly dont think the way you and your girl did

The mentality that the US is on top of anything is what causes the decline.

Its about recognizing your current status AND your potential as well. But I agree pride comes before a fall, but arrogance is one of America's defining traits, but so is uniting in a struggle. We will see which one is our true defining trait as times get rougher
