Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
I’m youger than a few a people so I need people to explain this to me. Specifically from NYC.

Nastradamus was certified platinum the year it dropped and had chart success. A few magazines have it an A or and 4/5 stars but was mixed.

I am sold 470,000 first week. Everyone was doing that back then either and received GREAT reviews and was a chart success and was platinum that year.

It was written and illmatic were before the two.

How was he critically dead in the water before takeover?
It was a new wave. Nas came in with Illmatic. Hard gritty shyt, instant classic, but on the low. It Was Written was seen as going a little left. But it went double plat so nobody could blame him. I Am... was 1999. It was meh.. It sold double again, but people were starting to ask, where's the old Nas. DMX was hitting and Jay was just coming into his own and had a crew with him. He dropped another album in 1999, Nastradamus. Nobody was fukking with that album. Nobody who was an Illmatic fan or even IWW fan was fukking with Nas. He dropped the QB album in 2000. Again. Nothing was hitting.

Meanwhile Jay and the Roc were EVERYWHERE. Album every year, doing 2-5 million every time, mixtapes, movies, tour, clothing, ads. Steady from 98 to 2001. Nas wasn't even close to being on that level and the Bravehearts definitely wasn't. In that span on 1999-2001 (Ether), nikkas really wasn't fukking with Nas. Platinum was damn near the norm at that point if you had a name. But nobody in the street was really thinking Nas was coming back. shyt, Takeover dropped Sept 11 and Ether didn't come out till Dec 4. nikkas literally forgot this nikka and he just came out the blue and killed Jay. Had the entire Roc SCRAMBLING with one song. Got all his respect back in one song. Then dropped Stillmatic, to drive home the point, and give nikkas another instant classic.

I brought this up I think, but this was when Roc-A-Fella/Dame Music Group at the tail end signed Joe Budden, Raekwon, Nature, Nore and a bunch of other people and they did a freestyle together. But Roc was pretty much over at this point and it was a last ditch effort, and nobody talks about it.

Damn breh you summed it up perfectly. I was a big Illmatic fan so there was huge anticipation for IWW. Can’t lie I wasn’t even a fan of the first single with Lauryn but I was still pumped up for that album. And while I liked the album I was slightly disappointed that it was so different from Illmatic. It just had a different feel to it. I wasn’t a big fan of the Firm album. But when Nas dropped Nas is Like before I Am dropped I was thinking we were about to get another Illmatic type album. Nope. Nastradamus went even more left. So when Jay dropped Takeover and said what he said about dropping a hot album every ten year average. A lot of us who were with Nas from day one felt that line. Looking back I can appreciate that Nas era more. His pen game was arguably at its peak

I guess it really depends on the person. I'm from Queens and I knew tons of people who became Nas fans through IWW and I Am as opposed to Illmatic. Ilmatic was like Shawshank Redemption: Lowkey from the start but eventually became a widely known classic.

"If I Ruled The World", "Street Dreams", "Hate Me Now", and "Nas Is Like" got a lot of casual rap fans into Nas. I agree that Nastradamus sort of hurt Nas's momentum though.

All this is true. I know people who weren’t familiar with Nas like that till IWW and their perspective was totally different

When rappers get shot at but don't die or don't get hit.
It is almost as if nothing happened at all, and only counts if they get killed.

Rick Ross getting shot at in Florida. Freddie Gibbs getting shot at in NYC.
2 Chainz got shot at in SF.

Jay-z and R Kelly’s album, lol. I fux with Jigga but a lot of them 50-55ish late 60’s/early 70’s dudes were on some real creepy, spooky shyt when it comes to girls and the ages and all that. Not insinuating anything…but yeah. How do you know what this guy did to Aaliyah, someone you’ve said you loved, and then become BFF’s with him and form a group? *cues scary music*
