The satellite dropped from the sky. My theory is that this was going on at the same time the Cloverfield monster was rampaging NYC and the aliens were the ones taking out satellites to avoid detection.

I actually liked it even with my low expectations 4 out of 5 granted I was disappointed in Cloverfield. So maybe an entirely new story was ok with me.

I don't think people will be as scorned as they were with The Witch. Marketing made it look intense and it was a slow burn indie arthouse joint. Which this was too except for the last 10 min.
