On a related note, does anyone actually consider the instrumental "dj" songs on 80s hip hop albums to be actual songs? I think of them like skits. They don't factor in to how I view the albums.

I always viewed them shyt's as a way of giving you that live experience sort of bringing the party to you and as a way for the DJ to showcase his skills also, it's better to view 80's rap albums at least the earlier ones in the vein of those recorded live albums of the 60's & 70's.

It used to be like all about the Dj it swung the other way of course, and invariably swung back in favor of the DJ cum beatmaker so :ehh: it will swing back the other way at some point.

News Flash , old school music sucks and is generally overrated. It's all dated , and people rapped so basic. People just have nostalgia and the belief that they have to respect it , so they say it's good. Honestly I think Rap is the only music that doesn't age well. Yes I know there are some old songs that come on and you still bump but it's not like other genres.

Dragon Ball is from the 80's

Well, Follow the Leader, while not as well known as Paid in Full, is Eric B and Rakim's best album. Rakim will say so himself. They tossed out the "Chinese Arithmetics" and so forth and put out a front-to-back album. (Well, "Beats for the Listeners" was definitely filler, but they came close.)

To me, Run-DMCs first four albums still hold up very well, in particular Raising Hell. While their lyrics can be simple, their aggressive style has never really been matched.

I'm a Public Enemy Stan so, to me, It Takes a Nation is probably the greatest rap album of all time. And albums like that, Fear of a Black Planet, Paul's Boutique, and 3 Feet High are almost frozen in time because they were so sample heavy, with layers and layers, a sound that is impossible now thanks to the drastic changes in sampling laws brought about in large part from 3 Feet High. So, to me, it was impossible for them to become dated because it was the peak of that style and no more advancements were allowed.

i can agree on the point about tracks being out of place/filler, somethin 2 dance 2 for example, but cats sayin that 80s ish sounds dated is a joke. what else do you expect from a 30 year old album

i favor the 90s too but these albums paved the way. each of these albums are fresh in their own ways and albums from the 90s kinda branched off these albums one way or another. the whole albums are a work of art so i got no problem bumpin them from front to back

And they shouldn't be? Given that hip hop is turntable culture and started with the DJ supplying breakbeats in a new, never-done way of looping? :jbhmm:

Hip hop didn't exist till the beat got created. Dudes weren't even rapping in the beginning. (and no, IllmaticDelta, I don't need some long ass post from you.)

I absolutely agree with you that the art of rapping has been GREATLY diminished. I can listen to a number of those 80s albums and follow the rhymes all the way through. They're witty, friendly, badass at times, etc. They say a lot more interesting shyt than anyone rapping today. But.... hip hop isn't spoken word.

The biggest problem with modern hip hop is the lack of originality. Right after that, the biggest problem is the shyt beats. People keep talking about how bad the rhymes have gotten. The beats are on a whole other level of pathetic.

I feel that way about artists who debuted post 2003. Can barely make it through a song without cringeing, let alone a whole album. I look at the first page of the booth and I see a Drake feat. Future album stickied with over 100 pages and I just feel bad for the mods and young people man. A hip hop forum mostly focused on artists who weren't even around when hip hop was. They actually believe these artists are part of the same genre. :mjlol:

No it isn't. Not by a long shot.

Aint No Half Steppin is a better beat than 99% of modern hip hop. These new beats have zero charisma and are lifeless on entry.

My avi is the rare case where a new schooler got it right, and made some spectacular beats. That when you look closely, are in the vein of slowed-down RZA/Havoc with a pinch of Screw.

seriously? as in "hip hop is my favorite genre", buying tapes and discussing rap? 1997.

when I first heard rap? 1993/1994.

:what:

You fishing for daps breh?

@SirBiatch What rap albums CAN you listen to in full? What rap albums do you enjoy listening to in full?

Supreme Clientele
Illmatic
Cuban Linx
Liquid Swords
Infamous
sometimes Midnight Marauders (I always skip "Sucka nikka" - never liked that song)
Live.Love.ASAP (I have to skip a couple wack tracks tho)
Prose Combat (I might skip one track)

then I have stuff that's a lil lower tier that is still mostly great but I only listen to once in a while. And I'll probably skip a couple tracks.

Fantastic Vol 2
Foreign Exchange - Connected
