taraji was a great pick - visually - for shug

it looks decent, but of course you gotta be in the mood to watch TCP. i'll fire it up on demand with my mom, for whatever reason, that was one of her favorite movies back in the day

:beli: See here's the thing that's kinda pissing me off about this "reboot". The original was brutal due to the undertones of racism in the rural south, as well as incest and pedophilia. It shows the deep roots of the aftereffects after slavery with a twang of comedy. It told a tale of three worlds:

  • A black girl turned woman in a prison of physical and mental abuse (she wants to be free and be with her sister)
  • A black woman that fought all her life and end up falling down due to true racism (she wants to be free from both sides of the coin)
  • A black woman that's a prisoner to vanity and trying to find refuge of her past mistakes (free from the ministry that her father caged her in)
  • A black man that carried on the harmful deeds of his father, and his father's father (need to break the chain)
  • A black girl seeking her sister embracing the motherland, but at the cost of growing up without a past, except her sister (Shes free but at a cost)
This piece of wombat turds will be a soulless quick buck for Hollyweird to cash in on the desperation of movie goers to see something familiar. Its honestly insulting because nobody remaking Casablanca or fukking Gone With The Wind...because those movies are no-fly zones for the vultures.

Looks like it will be good. Halle Bailey is really getting her time to shine and I’m not mad at it.

I saw the color purple musical on Broadway years ago, and it was really good. I love musicals. I will be supporting Halle, Fantasia, and Taraji so I’ll be watching.

Yes it’s a depressing movie (book was depressing too) but its good. I know why some Brehs may not like it, but Alice walker admitted that the characters were based on a love triangle involving her grandfather who was terribly abusive and was meant to be reflective of what was taking place during those times. :hubie:

I understand but this is about women trying find strength navigating being raped and abused. Dream girls had an element of singing and women navigating the music industry. This is just very depressing and adapting the musical won’t change that . You would need to be wired different to want to see film like this on the holiday.
I wasn’t comparing the films, I’m saying with this being a Black classic (same as Dreamgirls) the studio is planning on raking in money, reason alone it’s being released on Christmas. No need to be re-wired differently; people are going to watch regardless.
