Finished it today. It was a bit too smooth/Hollywoodish at times, especially hoe arbitrarily alcoholic she was for the plot's sake, but overall it was good. Might agree with @ECA.

Also, they committed a terrible crime not cutting the ending by two minutes. She gets out of the car, turns towards the boulevard in the background, fade to black right there. That's the real ending. Everything after is tacky exposition for people who are oblivious to context.

I think he just got tired of her and left. That’s probably why he let her adopt her so he could leave.
