I agree where Spain beats Brazil would be in the midfield but I give Brazil a great chance cuz they could counter attack at will and as we've seen with Spain or Barca is you can catch them on counters and Brazils speed on counters would give Spain's back 4 problems ...but if you don't have the ball you will struggle
Spain don't let teams counter any more

That's why they are so boring now. They always have 11 behind the ball.

Brazil weren't even a great side in 2002. Stop overrating them.

that world cup was freakish...
South Korea and Turkey made it to the semifinals, along with an awful German team (the same one that England beat 5-1 in Munich nine months prior)

Underdog World Cup. Senegal was great also. :lawd:

That German team was fukking horrible. Khan, Klose, and Ballack saved them. Khan especially in that USA match. 2002 was also the best USA would cup squad. :myman:

Remember Ireland was taking it to Germany also. Mick the Gawd

Also, the let's just come out and say it:

The 2002 World Cup was a top to bottom debacle. The only reason it's looked on in a positive light is the U.S.' run and Brazil won in the end. shyt tournament with no memorable sides and a striking lack of world class talent. Ronaldo is the GOAT and all that, but an out of shape player fresh off of a career altering injury shouldn't dominate what's supposed to be the toughest competiton there is.

And while we're at it, 2006 was pretty terrible too, tbh. The entire tournament was a one man show. Portugal/Netherlands in particular was one of the worst games I've ever seen in my life, maybe only topped by Trinidad v Sweden from that same tournament.

God bless those vuvuzelas spurning the boys to better performances in 2010.

His timing was perfect though, he got fit just for the competition (Inter fans were mad about that). He beasted the following season at Madrid too... but he was never the same as the one from 1995-99 (the best forward I've ever seen)

Good posting. I think this tournament is a good example of the distinction between tiki takas i.e the Barca Tiki Taka and del Bosque's tiki taka which is much more defensive based. The major difference between is of course messi.

It was a joy to watch Spain regroup today as a unit and I think that's what makes them near impenetrable, and one of the best teams ever.

An even bigger difference is Del Bosque using two defensive midfielders (Busquets & Alonso), while Barca only uses one (Busquets).
That's also the difference between Spain at Euro 2008 with Aragones as coach: he used one defensive midfielder (Senna) and two forwards (Villa and Torres). They were far more exciting to watch and scored tons of goals.

I don't even think the biggest difference between the two is Messi. It's Xabi Alonso. Can't even think of another team that's fielded two midfielders who sit back so deep. That's the core of their boredom/narrowness/lack of options going forward/possession/defense right there. Between those two and Piquet/Ramos behind them it's almost like a 4-man box defense. It's like the evil, overly pragmatic, disgustingly effective twin of a magic box.

This was a good tournament. Good football too. Italy/Germany in that tournament was a great match. Argentina/Germany as well. France/Spain, France/Brazil, Cronaldo winking.

The Portugal/Holland match was bad in terms of quality but the excitement was :ahh:

One man show, breh. There's like eight thousand games in a world cup, and 98% of them in 2006 were pretty fukking terrible. Nedved slicing up the U.S. was a good game, as was the Italy/US cage match, but that tournament was asscheeks.

:comeon:

The foolery in that Portugal v Holland match makes it top ten football match of all time :russ:
