some recruiting notes:
Tay Scott: Yesterday, I made the decision to predict Michigan's top wide receiver target to eventually commit to the Wolverines. Naturally, everyone wanted to know why.
EDIT: I fixed this part of the note on Page four. It was a misunderstanding of words; I made a mistake.
Maybe more importantly, I've been told that there's a decent possibility that the Wolverines are actually in the lead for Scott and could eventually secure his commitment. The only thing standing in the way is that his family wants him to take his five official visits, one of which will likely be to Michigan. Will taking all five hold? It will be interesting to see what happens when he comes up to visit this summer. Of course, this would be a huge help in Michigan's attempts to land five-star sophomore wide receiver George Campbell as well.
Fournette: Michigan is going to make a run at five-star running back Leonard Fournette (New Orleans, LA/St. Augustine). Coach Jackson has been by the school very recently, in fact, and the Wolverines are trying to put themselves in a position to at least receive a visit from the superstar that many believe will end up in Baton Rouge at LSU.
At this point, I don't believe they feel like they're going to get that visit, but signs are definitely pointing towards them giving it a really good try. Again, part of this is sort of the aftermath of the Jabrill Peppers commitment, where kids notice and the coaches will try to seize the momentum with players they may not have had a shot with. The one thing going in their favor for a visit is that Fournette looks like he's in no hurry to make a decision. Maybe some persistence and continued success on the recruiting trail could help change his mind.
Hand/Settle: This weekend,
#1 overall prospect and
#1 overall Michigan target Da'Shawn Hand visits Ohio State's campus while in town for a NFTC in Columbus along with five-star sophomore defensive tackle Tim Settle.
I've learned that Hand has recently taken on somewhat of a mentoring role with Settle and has been giving him an idea of what to expect out of the process and what to look for when on a visit; stuff like that. Michigan has not offered Settle yet and to be honest, depending on who they finish out with in this class, it's possible he doesn't end up getting the offer.
Still, I've been told the two players have become pretty close, and that they work out together frequently as well. It's a relationship maybe worth monitoring going forward if the Wolverines are fortunate enough to reel Hand in.
Mike maybe an option? Yesterday, 247Sports National Analyst Barton Simmons reported that Sabino (AZ) four-star offensive lineman Andrew Mike will visit Michigan at the end of June.
Mike is a name that fell off the radar for a while, but is intriguing for a few reasons. First, around this time last year, Michigan was recruiting him pretty heavily and at one point it looked like he may have been a player they were ready to offer. That never happened, but there was strong interest from the Wolverines early on. Second, he's a good player with a great offer sheet. USC, Arizona State, Washington, Vanderbilt and Penn State are among those who have stepped forward, with Stanford, Oklahoma and Oregon among those who have continued to show him interest.
Another reason he's interesting, and Simmons touched on this, was his prior connection to the state of Michigan, where he has a lot of family. Mike actually grew up a Michigan fan. We've alluded to the possibility that the Wolverines would offer another offensive lineman in camp, but with Mike coming to campus, we'll see if something works out in that situation. It's at least worth monitoring.
