Note: We will
by safesaver">continue to look for reactions from the various prospects who attended the event yesterday.
As expected, the BBQ was a big success this weekend, with George Campbell's commitment possibly being the best scenario the coaches could have imagined. Still, moves were made with multiple prospects. These notes are based off conversations with a wide variety of sources over the last 24 hours or so.
Biggest Moves: The consensus coming out of the event was that the biggest move seemed to be made with Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin's 2015 OL Sterling Jenkins. If you read the interview from yesterday, it's clear not only the event, but the campus in general made a big impact on him. It was an event and visit he had been looking to take for a few months now and it sounded like it lived up to the expectations he had set. We've talked numerous times about his relationships with Michael Ferns and Chase Winovich, but after talking with Jenkins last night, he made good acquaintance with George Campbell and Mason Cole as well. Campbell even gave Jenkins a Michigan poster to take home "as a reminder".
Who's Next? The strong candidate for this spot is definitely Lakewood (OH) St. Edward cornerback Shaun Crawford, who finally came out and named the Wolverines his leader yesterday after another good visit for the event. Mark got the impression that he may be nearing a decision, wanting to talk to his parents soon about where things stand. The timing of when it may happen is unclear, but it could very well be soon. He's the one player to keep an eye on in the near future.
Will Thompson Get Offered? Was told from a few different people (including Tyriq) that the bulk he's put on even since the Sound Mind Sound Body camp took the coaches aback a bit yesterday. He's currently up to 212 and the King coaching staff is hoping to get him to around 225 or so eventually. More than one person I've talked to about Thompson said if he concentrates at linebacker, he has James Ross written all over him; instinctive, intelligent and not only makes contact, but welcomes it and thrives off of it. If Thompson impresses out of the gate this season, I wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan pull the trigger on an offer, even if they're in good position with a couple other prospects.
Where Campbell Can Help: I'll have more on this later, but one player that really seemed to take a liking to his commitment was
Jashon Cornell, the five-star defensive end out of Minneapolis, who actually texted me on Saturday to ask me if I had seen that Campbell had committed. Then I got the quote I shared on the board the other night: "(George's commit) definitely has an effect on me. It shows that the coaches know how to recruit top players and are building a top team."
With Damien Harris in the fold, I think Campbell's commitment could help with
Jacques Patrick, but not as much as the Twitter exchanges may have led people to believe. The
by safesaver">silver lining? Patrick's interest in Michigan is legitimate on its own, with or without Campbell, and the commitment is definitely not going to make things worse. I just don't know if it's an event that would shift his recruitment completely in Michigan's favor at this point in time. At the same time, the momentum is almost tangible right now and all bets are off the table.
Thiyo Lukusa: I talked the other night with the behemoth 2016 offensive line product out of Traverse City, MI, who made his second trip to Ann Arbor in less than a month. The biggest thing he was looking for was the educational aspect of what Michigan offered and the presentation "exceeded" his expectations. I do believe Michigan will offer very quickly after his sophomore season starts and I think he eventually becomes a Wolverine, although it may not be as quickly as once believed.
General Thoughts on Campbell: First, the Brady Hoke can't recruit (insert category of player here) meme should have been dead before Saturday's surprise. To be honest I don't know why it's even brought up anymore.
I tweeted this on Saturday, but Campbell's commitment garnered probably the biggest reaction of any recruit Michigan has gotten since I've started covering the topic and certainly within the last couple years or so. I think the spontaneity of it was a huge part of that, but it's more than that as well. With Derrick Green and Jabrill Peppers, by the time they committed it had become relatively clear that they were going to end up in Ann Arbor. Campbell was a surprise (not even Mason Cole knew it was going down going into the weekend) and is from the heart of SEC country with no previous ties to the Michigan program or area in general.
What stinks is that the scholarships for this cycle will be smaller. Otherwise you'd be looking at what I believe would be a class that even bests what will likely end up happening to finish out 2014.
