No AA and white people are the minority at the campus? That's no coincidence.

It's just unintended consequences, I'm sure there was racist motivation behind getting rid of AA, but it backfired becuase getting rid AA increased the number of Asians and decreased the number of whites, that is one of the side stories to this

The other side story to this is that a lot of racism and alienation blacks feel on campus is coming from Asians who are actually a bigger group on most campuses than whites

People need to stop throwing the word minority around and get specific, there are plenty of "minorities" in UCLA, minorities are the majority at UCLA

But anyways those are just side stories, overall I think black students need to buck up and black parents need to step up, that is the only real solution becuase there isn't any evidence of racism in the actual admission process

sure there is class bias, but like race, that shouldnt be addressed at the admissions office, it should be addressed where it actually happens, at the elementary and high school level

Everything is connected... You can't be comfortable with bias in one area and not bias in another area.

You also don't fix issues by ignoring them. lol @ "sure there is class bias", if the process isn't purely objective than racial bias are easier to do, classicism will unfairly target american minority groups. A kid can't change his own circumstances at the elementary and high school level.

there isnt any evidence of racism in the admission process

i think there is classicism but i dont think trying to correct classicism would automatically help black people, just like AA ended up being for tom dikk and harry, efforts to address classicism will also end up helping poor whites and poor asians, it wouldn't necessarily help poor blacks or address the disparity, there are way more poor whites than poor black people, even in california

as far as society in general, i believe in individual freedom and at the end of the day any student should be judged through a straightforward process and judged as an individual, i dont believe you should be judged as part of a group, i think individual freedom is what addresses classicism

Parents in the 1970s voted for laws like Proposition 13, which started in California and spread out to the West. They happened to coincide with the Supreme Court ruling that while schools had to be integrated racially, they didn’t have to be integrated socio-economically and didn’t have to be equitably funded. Some folks in California tried to correct that ruling by forcing District 9 (the historically MOST liberal court in the country) to say that the state, if not the federal government, had to equalize funding. In response, the rich wrote laws to lower their taxes on their homes, pulled their kids out of district schools and put them into private schools, redrew district lines so poor kids were stuck in one district, and then donated more money to their kids schools. Meanwhile, parents, like my mom and the moms of most of my friends, were resisting too. They broke laws to get their kids in the other districts. They told us our own history. They fought with administrators as they kept us out of the good schools and then when administrators couldn’t do that out of the good classes. I am only 25, my little sister is 18 and I have personally seen all this happening. As far as I know, this is continuing to happen, and it is widespread and systematic. I know because there is a very carefully orchestrated reason that schools like Menlo Atherton high school have both the racial violence that they have and also have the tracking programs they have. Schools that had integration injunctions built carefully designed tracks, tracks that they could use, in conjunction with national tests that seemed to be something only poor kids would fail, to keep the poor children and nonwhite children out of the higher classes, ie. the College classes.

well like ive said already, i dont believe in integration and i dont believe in the public schools system, i think the public schools should be eliminated and i believe in independent charter schools and vouchers and i believe in black people changing our culture to more academically oriented

as long as they are following the constitution white people can do whatever the hell they want, im not worried about what white people are doing, i worry about what black people are doing

please. You are basically retarded on the process. Non university faculty are the first readers of the apps. Its random people who go through 'training' then app reader sups, then admissions people... From point 1 to point 3.... ALL process are purposefully Subjective NOT Objective. You're so much so on a pursue to diss black youth that you want to believe in the fantasy land that California's colleges aren't as racist as the state that runs them or the nation they are in.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/04/e...-california-berkeley.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

:rudy:

This process has increased asian admission.. especially asian immigrant admission. Think about it like this..... .These are people, not computers. White people at that. I'm a black man... if 5 people apply for a job, I'm going with the black girl, if shes qualified. Period. Nobody could sue because shyt like that is hard to prove.... Quit being naive, things work like that at all levels and with the State of California having this fake ass "holistic" approach.... they can discriminate even more.... I could put caucasion female and some of the things on the app would still give me away at a top university.

what is it that you read in that story that causes you to think black students were being discriminated against?

the fact that it causes an increase in asian admissions and a decrease in whites tells you what? that its racist?

this is the history behind the "holistic" approach: after AA was eliminated there was a drop in blacks and latinos, and to bring the numbers back up that is when they went with the so called holistic approach, in other words the whole purpose of the "holistic" approach was to try to get more black and latino into the school, and to not just use grades and test scores, but at the end of day its gpa and test scores that will carry the day and that is what black people should focus on and that is why even with the "holistic" approach all it did was cause an increase in asians

im not defending or promoting the "holistic approach" that was actually other people, i think its just a bunch of handwaving

and i never said california college are racist, i said there is no evidence that black students are being discriminated against in the admissions process

That combined with income and school district bias... and human error (really intent) cause discrimination. There isn't a system that doesn't take advanced research to uncover the discrimination. Just like we can say the justice system is bias............. or we can say nikkas just need to not commit crime. CJ researchers show a bias.

I don't even know what the hell you just wrote, but i will say this, if there was evidence that black students were being discriminated against it would have been exposed already and UCLA would have been sued

To prove discrimination you would have to show that a black student with high scores didn't get in, that isn't happening, that is why the NAACP etc haven't sued, the reality that some of y'all don't want to accept is that there are very few black students with the scores to get into these schools, that's just a reality, and apparently the few that do don't want to go to UCLA

And addressing classicism would have the side effect of helping the huge number of poor whites and poor Asians

So the only real solution is for black students to study harder and for black people to shift to a more academic culture

Why do you think that they do not want to go to UCLA?

a couple of reasons

1) mostly if you got grades good enough to get into UCLA or UC Berkley and if you are a black you will most likely get into Stanford, Harvard etc in fact if you are black, and at that level, every top school in the country will suck your dikk so the UC schools arent that attractive at that point

2) all i said was that the admission process isnt racist, UCLA itself is racist as fuk, the racism comes from a) whites in the administration and b) from the asians and latinos that make up the bulk of the student body, my experience in the UC system is the the main reason i believe other minorities are just as racist as white people, thats why i dont fuk with all that multicultural or pro amnesty immigration shyt, i can assure you black people will occupy the same position in "brown" america that they occupy in white america, the UC system is an example of this

i think this was posted here last year

but that being said, the real problem is that there are not enough black students performing at the top levels, that is what is really going on, the supply of top performing black students is minuscule relatively speaking, if there were more, than the black students that dont get into ivy league schools would fall back to ucla and berkely, but as it as there isnt a good reason for top performing black students to stick to a UC school

imo jiggling the admission system isnt gonna change anything, the only real solution is for black people to buck up, academically speaking and flood the system

Man this video has been spreading like wildfire, but I think it's corny to tell you the truth, and I say that as a UC graduate (not UCLA)

Black students need to get their grades up, that's the bottom line, getting into any of the UC's is straightforward, it's about your grades and test scores, and it should stay that way

Some truth to your argument but...

you can fall for that mess if you want too, but if that's what they are going to go by then why are there so many black players on their teams? They do what they want, to fit it the way they want. All our kids (especially our athletes) need to quit supporting these schools and come back home....

That is the reality. Non-athlete black students are not wanted at these schools. We are the activists when racist shyt happens on campus, black athletes give zero fukks when racist shyt happens on campus or in society. If you are a black male and not an athlete, you will not be treated well at a lot of these schools. I've seen it with my own eyes.

Exactly bruh, institutions such as UCLA have the resources to do targeting recruiting and address the racists environment that is not conducive academically and socially for blacks... but no fukks are given because of the perception that they are progressive smh

Some of them are racist...... but if you go to a top school a large % of brown hispanics and asian don't even come from america or are few generations removed.... You don't think they are just separatist and simply stick to their own - as opposed to out right racist??

I know that at my school my black friends seriously would not even speak or eat at the same time with white people. They weren't racist.. they just were from HS's in Detroit that contained maybe 1 or 2 whites and weren't used cac.
