I think that Pulp Fiction represents that year in film better as far as the experimentation and just telling different stories: Quiz Show, Clerks, Ed Wood, Hoop Dreams, and several other films like Crooklyn from that year took chances or just told stories from a different point of view. Even four weddings and a funeral did that for American audiences at least. In a year where a lot of filmmakers are just experimenting and throwing stuff against the wall and toying around with narrative and character, sometimes making unlikable characters the main stars even, I feel like Pulp Fiction better represents that. There's no question that they were both huge movies so that's not even a question. The 90s were a decade when filmmakers were really just trying to find out what the next generation wanted and what they'd respond to. A lot of new filmmakers emerged just trying to see what works and Pulp Fiction, in my mind best represents that
right I feel you but does that really matter?

this reminds me a lot of the MVP debate in sports. does a player make himself valuable or does circumstance? personally I believe it to be a little bit of both.

but the MVP is not the best player award. it essentially the best performance award.
because god knows if it were a best player award than guys like lebron would have won it every year for the last decade.

best picture is best picture. that year could have went to any of the big 3 but l think Gump was the one you felt was most confident would be an instant classic the first time you saw it. like that fukkin movie was just WAITING to be made.

question, what movie would you venture to say more people have seen? Forrest Gump or pulp fiction?

Well obviously it matters for this thread since that's what we're talking about. And I disagree, I think Pulp Fiction felt like the instant classic but obviously it's all preference and subjective. And you could even make the argument that Quiz Show was the best movie from that year which is why that wasn't my argument: Which best represents the year in film not the best. Social Network is better than the Kings Speech, Kings speech won. The best movie doesn't always win but again, the best movie is subjective.

In my mind, the oscar pick should represent the year in film so to me it does matter.

And I can't make that guess breh, none of us can unless we've been around the world several times and talked to so many people. We can only speak from a personal level and on a personal level, I'd say Pulp fiction but you may say Forest Gump based on your personal experiences. I know it's the movie that's more talked about by filmmakers and publications and actors but does that mean more people have seen it? I don't know, I can only speak for my experiences so that's a loaded question because now we're just using straw men and anecdotal evidence as opposed to facts

Am I the only one who dident think Crash deserves the hate?

I mean it's not a masterpiece or anything but the message overall was much deeper than a story about two fakkits...:yeshrug:

I agree with this breh.

Bill simmons (:mjpls:) had an article a few years back and they went back the past 25 yrs or so seeing if they agree with the best picture oscar or would change it.

He said the best picture should be like the mvp and be the best movie that one associates with that year.

And i somewhat agree

No one thinks of 2010 and thinks "oh The King's Speech!" :beli:

because if 20 years later it's still the most seen movie of the bunch, isn't it safe to say they made the right pick the first time?
well. Pulp has over 1 million votes on IMDB.

Forrest had 898K.

But then again this is a sample size of film nerds vs the general public.

But most of coli hates forrest..yet the people have it rated #10 on IMDB

I'd still say forrest is most seen over all though

But Pulp gets Talked about more by far

especially for the 20 year anniversary talks it was all pulp and not much about forrest that I can recall.

so i don't really get your point breh

Plus you're comparing an R rated flick to PG13

talked about more by who? show me someone who hasn't seen Forrest Gump!

that movie was the birth of a modern myth!

like you said it's the most seen movie of 1994 after 20 years!

Right..that's like saying what album had more impact in hip hop: enter the wu or To the Extreme. I'm not comparing Forest Gump to Vanilla Ice at all but sales can be dope but long-term impact, to me, matters more. Which is why I said it's a silly argument. Forest Gump being the more accessible movie, of course more people have seen it.

Breh it's all anecdotal though. What facts can we dig up right now to see how many people have seen pulp fiction up to 2014 vs Forest Gump? How do we measure that? Wouldn't we have to question every single person on the planet and ask because box office mojo only accounts for the box office. I guess we could tally home video sales? But even then, we don't have access to that or at least I don't, maybe you know something I don't breh.
