This is true. Back in the late 70's and 80 were like elite decades in the boxing world. It was very viable to take up boxing, it was an inexpensive sport, and it took up enough time to keep kids off the streets, but the crack era greatly increased the illicit betting pools and they were snatching up kids left and right. My one friend was an aspiring Heavyweight boxer, he was a big dude around 6ft at 15 years old and he was a solid 215, he got scooped up by a shady promoter and was forced to take dives, it ruined him and his development, he could have been a real contender and he even had an HBO fight or 2 in the 90's, but he was no where near what he could've been.

Boxing was always rigged and stuff, but it got out of control in the mid-late 80's. I'm talking you got thrown in a dumpster if you didn't take a dive bad. There was that much money on the line even at the amateur level.

Believe me that fact doesn't escape me, the incarceration rates are in the millions under his watch. I just felt the need to point out a trend post Civil Rights.
