BP is also great because if you take away the comic book superhero element. It still makes for a very rich story with many elements.

That's not to say something like infinity war isn't great. It absolutely is, but BP like winter soldier can stand outside the comicbook world and to me that add a lot to the movie.

This. I love IW, NWH, EG, etc but those 2 stand out on their own of just being great films outside of even the superhero element.

My only complaint about BP was Killmonger killing his girlfriend. It was completely unnecessary and seem like a plot tool to only make him seem evil. :francis:

He was evil though. Just because he had righteous intentions doesn't make him a good person. The whole point of that scene was exactly as you described. He was so hellbent on getting to Wakanda, exacting revenge, and bringing his vision for the world to life that even his girl was expendable.

We empathized with him and understood him, yeah, but where a lot of ya'll lose me is in dismissing his obvious evil qualities. Then again, that's what makes him a top notch villain.

Always felt like it was a B. I felt the action could have been better. Like its solid, but I never felt blown away like got damn at any moment. I think the hype overrates it a bit, but its still a good movie. It's not classic to me, but its not average or bad either. It's better than shyt like Black Widow, Antman, and Shazam, but its not seeing Dr. Strange, Civil War, Man of Steel imo. Its in the higher tier of superhero movies. If someone had it on there top 10 list, I wouldn't argue.

I'll give my controversial take on this movie . Will definitely be viewed as the unpopular opinion on this forum (though I don't visit The Film Room much anyways so who knows) ...

I'll explain on here the same way I explain to my homies why "Black Panther isn't that good of a movie"

I'll preface this by saying I only saw the movie one time , in the movie theater ,, and never saw it again . Didn't interest nor excite me to see it again ... hopefully yall won't attack or neg me for giving my opinion ,, maybe it'll help add to the discussion at hand .. (so the summary I'll be giving is off the top)

imo it was an agenda driven movie ..

1) T'Challa is the king .. but his sister is smarter than him .. all woman army , so a woman is in charge of the military branch .. plus he had to chase around Lupita Nyong'o , his love interest ,,, basically convincing her to respect his authority .. but you the King right ? :martin:

2) they had all the men of Wakanda exiled in the mountains in the tundra .. all the residents of Wakanda were women and old folk .. so if I'm to be apart of Wakanda I gotta be a lapdog or exiled into the mountains to freeze ? Where the women at for the Mountain Wakandians ? :stopitslime: basically all the "masculine men" were viewed as beyond reproach and exiled ... that doesn't sound like a Wakanda I want to be apart of

3) they kill off KIllmonger; so they can save Capt America evil brother for a bunch of sequels ,, they can save Thor evil brother for a bunch of sequels .... but they kill off Killmonger ?? KIllmonger ain't worthy of redemption ? :martin:

4) so the white FBI agent can fly Shuri special jets ,, but not her fellow Wakanda brothers ? :martin:

5) at the end of the movie ,, they open Wakanda for all the Nations to reap the rewards of their vibranium .. now doesn't that sound like some "all lives matter" shyt .. you think Rome opened their borders to let all the world's nations reap them from their resources ? Did Iraq open its borders to let nations reap them from their oil ? Oh but Black Wakanda gotta be on some "love the world" shyt ,, and let everybody reap their natural resource :martin: sounds like a script written by white people straight from 1400's Africa :martin:

6) with all the vibranium money , what do the world leaders of Wakanda do ? Buy Atlanta ? Buy NYC or Harlem ? Buy any city with that new vibranium money ? No . That buy a single block in Comption . :martin:One block . :martin: When they got enough wealth to buy the entire city :martin:

tell me how the hell does this movie make black people seem more superior than average .

I won't even get into the parts where the women have more lines and screentime than T'Challa (.. but that's the king right)
I won't get into how easily they accept the white FBI agent's "helping hands" while they have all the brothas exiled freezing in the tundra mountains with no women
I won't get into the opening introduction of Killmonger is him sagging his pants , only for him to be sacrificed at the end

I won't even get into the final battle .. which is point 7) a literal gender war between men and women ,, and with the men bowing down to the women at the end of the movie

Tell me how this movie isn't riddled with agenda tropes :martin:

Get Out > Black Panther
Birth of a Nation > Black Panther

atleast those movies show brothas having each others back .

(hopefully I don't get fragged and attacked for giving my opinion ,, but I literally had this face:unimpressed: during my entire experience watching this movie . even fell asleep in the movie theater , and probably didn't miss a thing .... but then again I lost interest of Marvel superhero movies a long time ago .. this had a black cast and I support my black cast movies and will continue doing so ,, but Black Panther wasn't that special to me , imho)

This is spot on but I don't know, the hype around this flick struck a subconscious nerve with the group (of black folks) who were so starved to see a "superhero movie about us" that they refuse to be critical of it.

Masterful marketing.

Only real complaint is the third act and the fight scenes especially the cgi fight at the end. It is in marvel’s top five though.

It's a standout movie in that Universe. Most of the rest follow a template damn near, but BP was refreshing, I'm saying this as someone who hadn't watched all the movies when I initially saw BP. After catching up and rewatching it along with everything else, it shines a lot brighter and is much harder to forget than a lot of the other MCU films for sure.

Was the only super hero film to use the depowering of the hero cliche in a logical and entertaining way.
Most of the time i hate that,

Black Panther is still a top 5 MCU movie, IMO. Chadwick Boseman killed his role and it’s a real shame that they took way too long with a sequel (RIP). Killmonger is one of the best villains in the MCU, and it’s scary how accurate some of these TLR posters share almost his exact philosophy (Killmonger was right about the problem, but his approach to the solution was all wrong).

The fight choreography wasn’t the greatest, but I would still put Black Panther up there with the likes of Iron Man 1, Avengers 1, Winter Soldier, Civil War, and No Way Home.

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
The final fight didn't need to be CG honestly.

Furthermore, I wish it would've gotten the same treatment as The Eternals allowing for more onsite locations. Shooting in Nigeria or Ghana. I'm curious to see what the tax benefits are compared to Australia.

Other than that, the movie was piff.

I gave it a B+. Mainly because his final fight with Killmonger "left a lot of room for opportunity" as they say at my job.

Otherwise, i don't remember too many movies where a good portion of the audience left saying the villain was actually right about his motivations and the hero was looking kind of funny in the light. :lolbron:
