To put it simply Market hurts = Hedge funds asset values go down.
Postive asset values are what balances out margins in a trader's portfolio. When that balance is shifted negatively then margin calls are more likely. Especially for people who have bad short bets as liabilities on their balance sheet.
GME/AMC holding strength in a bearish market puts the squeeze pressure. And the economy/market is standing on the edge of a cliff right now.
