Social media killed the movie star.

There used to be a mystique about an actor before the social media era.

Now, everyone is too accessible (Leonardi Dicaprio does a good job of just laying low and not overexposing himself).

Plus, dramas that I would pay to see in a theater when I was growing up are now much better suited for TV, particularly in a series format (The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc).

Tarantino saying these nikkas are Aunt Viv and you just recast and keep it moving like they did with Quicksilver.
He’s not.

He’s saying no one is really seeing these movies because of the actors.

In the 90’s a Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Tom Hanks, Denzel, Julia Roberts movie coming out, people knew from just their involvement, they were going to see the movie, which would end up making a bunch of money.

What’s the last Scarlett movie to make bank?

RDJ flopped with Doolittle.

People aren’t hitting up the show to see Chris Hemsworth.

This right here….. honestly this is a reality with society… in regards to ‘art’ the same thing can be said about music super stars or “stadium acts”… as time goes on, this is going to be a thing. A bunch of actors have caught on, as it was rare for movie stars to switch to tv roles or release ‘straight to dvd’ films. Times have changed and it’s about quantity content as opposed to quality content. It is what it is

Easy way to illustrate what Tarantino is saying about these MCU stars not being movie stars is to look at how many times they, as the lead of a film, have grossed $100 million or more at the box office, OUTSIDE the MCU. And compare it to...well, real movie stars of the past.

Movie Star - Brad Pitt

32 films with 100Ms at the worldwide box office. And all of the films that are 15-20 years old would have higher worldwide box office numbers adjusted for 2022 inflation. For instance, Troy's $484 million in 2004 would be $763 million today. 12 Monkeys would be $330 million today.

MCU Star - Chris Evans

14 films with 100Ms or more....but 9 of them are MCU. 2 other are also super hero flicks. 1 was animated Disney, and the other was a cameo where he appeared as a MCU character (Free Guy).

So you can legitimately argue that Chris Evans, as a lead outside the MCU or Disney machine, has only one film to his name that grossed 100M worldwide, the ensemble flick Knives Out. Of course you can do the inflation for his earlier films, but the picture should still be clear.

Movie Star - Julia Roberts

24 films that hit $100 million or more at the box office. She wasn't the billed lead in all, but she was in most.

MCU star - Brie Larson

6 films that hit 100Ms, but zero of them are non-MCU films where she was billed as the lead.

I chose Chris Evans and Brie Larson specifically because they have billion dollar solo movies to their name in the MCU. Yet outside of that, they aren't really stars at the box office. People would go see "a Julia Roberts movie." No one is checking for "a Brie Larson movie."

It proves QT right about where Hollywood is atm, and will continue to go in the future.

What about Cumberbatch

Strange and Iron Man were C level heroes until they played them. Strange success was partially due to the Infinity War saga but they wanted an established actor to take the character to the next level like they did with Iron Man. RDJ did so well as Ironman that he is going to have a tough time being seen as anything else. He was an established actor beforehand who just had personal issues and was a reclamation project. Chadwick was an established skilled actor before hand too. Johansson made Black Widow also. Nick Cage and Johny Blaze

For characters that are A list or B list they get lesser known actors because the characters sell themselves. I get that. Hulk, Spiderman etc. Tom Holland did well in that Matt Damon movie though. A lot of those actors are still young and under contract. Let's give it some time.

But look at Blade post Snipes. The character is not bigger than Snipes. Sticky Fingaz flopped.

Also notice how he didnt mention DC.

Bale, Affleck, Halle berry, Jack Nicholson, Dammy Devito etc

Well B Jordan was in Black Panther, and he also is the star of a franchise called Creed, so once again Tarantino is wrong

he's made because obody wants to watch his flabby and sick movies

Scorcese and Tarantino are flabby and sick, all their shyt was always over hyped in the 90s, young people today do not give a fukk about them or their artsy movies

either evolve and make something new people want to see, or shut up

These MCU actors appear in a MCU movie and it pulls in hundreds upon hundreds of millions at the box office, sometimes even billions. Then they appear in a non-MCU movie and no one checks for it.

I bet most people that love Chris Evans can't even name 5 Chris Evans movies if they aren't allowed to name MCU movies.

Push
Not Another Teen Movie
Playing For Keeps
Knives Out
That Netflix movie lol

Aight, it is hard :russ:

Edit:

It’s “Playing It Cool”. I bought that jawn for $1 at Walmart just because.

How did I forget Snowpiercer :snoop:

I also watched The Perfect Score back in the day but forgot he was in it. With Darius Miles no acting ass :russ:

The fact is the heroes were cast so well in most cases and the marvel universe made so many people so attached to the characters that they are always going to be seen as those characters unless they were established beforehand.

It's an argument that may be true on its face for some of the actors but 1. It's too early to say for the younger ones and 2. It's an unfair take because they did so well with the characters and elevated them.

I think he has disdain that there was so much source material for them to work with and it was seen as "easy" for cinema purists rather than come up with new original shyt out of nowhere

Michael B Jordan did well with Creed beforehand and after too. It's just a lazy take

QT's last movie was the second highest grossing movie of his career. It made more than Shazam and Godzilla King of the Monsters at the domestic box office. Made more than John Wick 3, Men In Black with Thor and Valkerie(, X-Men Dark Phoenix, Us, and Terminator Dark Fate worldwide.
