People do not look back at the original and the controversy it caused, in favorable light.

This movie only appeals to the type of bitter women who do not have husbands and boyfriends to go to the movies with.

I'm not even sure it appeals to them at this point. The anti-black male stuff is certainly still very much in vogue but there aren't many people clamoring to spend their Christmas/New Years holiday watching trauma porn at the theater. I feel like the movie just came out at the wrong time, the cast wasn't compelling, and the marketing was weak (in part thanks to Taraji spending her time complaining about her own career instead of promoting the film). There are no stars in the film, people just didn't care. We'd be having a different conversation if Denzel was in this for instance. Or at least we would...Taraji would be complaining about not being paid as much as him lol.

In truth, no race necessarily want's to see their gender opposite with another race, which is why Denzel earlier in his career didn't want to kiss Julia Roberts bc he felt he would get backlash from black women, and (more-so from the studios politics) up until their mid careers him and Will Smith often were asexual or avoided a "hero gets the girl" moments in their big box office attempts (Bad Boys 1, MIB 1, Virtuosity, etc).

Hell, with the movie Hitch (Will Smith, Eva Mendez) which was a very successful mainstream rom com i recall that they cast a latina as the love interest specifically because they didn't want to stigmatize a mainstream movie as a "black movie". I figure the Focus film with Will/Margott probably had similar rationale, even if unspoken.

Now a days, you can have a better chance of a black male lead in a mainstream movie having a black love interest (MBJ - Creed, Chadwick [RIP] - Black Panther) but just getting the lead role still isn't that common. So that just compounds the problem that black women have in getting those big hollywood roles, and that's not even getting into the colorism aspect of it.

shorty played a Dievester twice. she played in a movie where she couldn't leave her house or she'd die and she left the house for some cac and...died.

Then and this is what absolutely killed her career when she was in 1940's germany and she fell in love with a... Nazi

Both of these movies were written by a BW married to a Korean where she wrote a ton of Young Adult Divestor diaries.

Then there was the fact that her own mother was a wench

But this Divestor shyt is all just internet babble.

I mean, ok then. 🤷🏾‍♀️ So then why did she accept the role? Why not turn it down?

That is my original question. My only guess is it's getting harder for black actors in general and she probably spends way more money than necessary. She hinted at it in an interview where she talked about having an entourage and sending her son to some elite school that costs thousands of dollars a month.

I remember when that was coming out and they showed the trailer for like a week it seemed then completely stopped.

I guess tiny hats didn't like a movie tryna spin up sympathy and love for nazis. But interesting who did lol

The movie was always gonna underperform for several reasons.

1) No one asked for a remake, let alone a remake of the musical.
2) Promotion for the film was almost non-existent
3) December releases typically perform poorly unless oscar bait.

Blaming Taraji Henson for the film is a cop out because the studio clearly showed they didn’t have much faith in the film to begin with. If they did, she wouldn’t have been complaining about pay to begin with.

Above the fray.
That doesn't make any sense to me. The movie just came out on Christmas, not nearly enough time to generate buzz plus she's already been nominated for Oscar before. She knows she's worth more than the average just based off that. By comparison Monique was a somewhat unproven actress when she did Precious.
This was a high profile project, based on book, film,Broadway musical that were hits and got industry/critical acclaim.

This was definitely a film seen as having industry award and box office potential. Everybody attached to the film must have thought so. Including the actress who is trying to get her salary up .

And Taraji got top billing, even though Shug Avery is a supporting character.

Doesn't really address the fact that she was already a previously nominated actress with a significant value. All the other actresses in the film are way less known
