I hate this way of thinking. Yes they won't be able to sign free agents but by wasting cap space on someone not deserving you take yourself out of the chance of landing assets. We have been seeing teams rack of draft picks just by using open cap space. You can then either flip those picks to be able to trade for a star or hope to hit in the lottery by using those picks. I'd much rather have the flexibility that comes with open cap space than over spending on a non-star like Gobert.
that flexibility means nothing if youre the jazz. They pretty much have relied on drafting and development for years now while signing rando mid-tier pieces. Now for starters, even if the Jazz dont sign Rudy, theyre cap situation isnt gonna be flexible once Mitchell's contract kicks in. They are gonna either be barely below or exceed the cap. So this flexibility you speak of simply wont exist. Secondly, I just dont see how letting Rudy walk benefits the franchise.
There is no logic in playing the money-game because as I mentioned earlier theyre screwed either way but also they arent a free agent destination. Whats the purpose of saving money other than helping the owner's pockets? The odds of finding another Rudy Gobert are low, and even if they did it would take years to find out. The moves they have made have indicated they are trying to win NOW. Letting dude walks makes no sense.
Now if they are hell-bent on not paying him, start fielding offers NOW, because come mid-season you arent getting alot of value for him absent of a guarantee to resign somewhere. I also disagree that paying Gobert takes them out the chase of landing assets. They have other movable pieces and have a history of drafting and developing.
