They already drafted Azubuike this year and signed Derrick Favors. I’m pretty sure they have a contingency plan in place for when Gobert walks. The Jazz are loaded with defensive talent, it doesn't make sense to pay Gobert that money.
these defense only star players usually start to fall off around 30-33, he already 28. you pay him the supermax and 3, 4 years from now he will be one of the worse contracts in the league.

Between the covid situation & this, I'd be shopping him for a trade ASAP as opposed to allowing him to walk for free. He's not a supermax player.

those bringing up the cap are missing the point. the jazz dont sign fa's so the cap is irrelevant, or theoretically, it should be. signing gobert to a super-max wont prevent them from getting anything of worthwhile value, they are a small market team who is going to have to build through the draft. if im donovan mitchell, im pissed if they dont re-sign dude. obviously he isnt worth 40m a year based off his limiations, but from a contractual standpoint he did his part to earn the qualification. Him and his agent would be silly to accept anything else in utah.
