This is a fair point. I’m white and that’s exactly how I found out about Doom. Although it was right before Operation Doomsday dropped.
Come to think of it, I don’t remember the Source showing him any love at all from 97-99? And the Underground artists usually got love in sure shot singles and there was one other monthly article the name of which escapes me at this point. Even Cage got a write up in 97.

Does anyone remember what the Source did in regards to Doom leading up to Operation Doomsday?
I don't think the Source did anything on DOOM back then

I basically found out about DOOM on the internet. in 99 my homie had gave me his mixtape, and on there was KMD's "It Sounded Like a Roc". when I heard that, the memories came back to me about the shyt that went down with the Black b*stards album (which the Source did cover). the internet had just started popping around then with Napster, Audiogalaxy, etc., and I was thinking I might be able to find some version of the Black b*stards album there. doing some research, I found my homie had got that song from the Fondle Em KMD - Ruffs and Rares EP. I also found out that Zev was still around under the name MF DOOM. I listened to some snippets of his songs (Dead Bent & Gas Drawls) on Sandboxautomatic, and it was like an epiphany: I had to get this music (doing this research I also found SOHH).

turns out this is right when Operation Doomsday had released, and I saw a picture of that album cover. there was this little record shop by me that mostly had house music, with a little hip hop section, and I remembered I had seen that album there when I was browsing like a week before. I pretty much ran over there to cop (I also got Slum Village Vol 1 at that shop, so I think their little hip hop section was curated by someone really into underground hip hop), and the rest is history...

kind of a side note to Cage is he was working with Sub Roc when he died. I always wonder if that music is out there somewhere
Just to piggy back off these posts. Pete Nice and Cage paying homage.

Here to pay my respects. Always made me feel like anything was possible.
Like art was cool and that it mattered.
What a legend. He didn't tell his fans til the end of the year. That's what generals do, the show must go on.
I just found some music he dropped this year that I haven't listen too.
He did it all for the fans.
I walked into a record store a few months ago and I saw MadVillain. Bought it instantly. It's a treasure.
Doom would take me to another world. Listening to Doom is like being in Marvel. I still have art I drew of him in highschool.
One of the biggest inspirations in my life.

Sometimes the Villain is the Hero.
Thanks for everything DOOM
RIP

From what I recall I don't think they did anything at all. I don't even think it got a review.

What a glaring omission by the Source :hhh:
Thank god for the internet :wow:
I remember there was this site called Cipher Divine that would post MP3s for all types of underground shyt. My introduction to Doom came from that website when they posted Rhymes Like Dimes. I think Hiphopsite was up on him too. Whatever was being written about him must have been glowing because I made a point to listen to Rhymes Like Dimes and was blown away by how unorthodox it was. Then Operation Doomsday dropped and I was fukking with it heavy. Not as much as Murda Muzik, but I spent a lot of time with that album in 99. If I’m thinking of that fall of 99, it was still Murda Muzik all day everyday but Doom was getting heavy play, then 2001 dropped :wow:
Then right at the end of the year we got Mos and Pharoah :wow:
Then Supreme Clientele dropped and I played that all day everyday :wow:
It was a wonderful time :wow:

One of the most underrated file sharing programs ever. You could put your favorite type of music/artist and it would automatically download it whenever new shyt dropped. Low key that's how I got a ton of more obscure DOOM joints. I literally still remember hearing Yikes on it. :wow:

Does Doom have one defining song that you can play at a hip hop gig and most fans will know? Like a "Simon Says", "Worst Comes To Worst", "93 Til", "Hip Hop", "Definition", "You Never Knew" etc.

I've always seen him as more of an album artist and I just let his music play through. But I'm not gonna lie like I was always super deep on his catalogue either.

I just remember all those sharing programs would come and go. they would shut one down, and a new one would pop up

DOOM is a legend but at the same time, he was always underground. The most media shine he got was probably via alternative media like Adult Swim and other places in the mid 00s. So while on one hand I don't mind clowning Hot 97 and others who completely ignored his existence...I would have never expected those platforms to give an underground rapper like DOOM any love or interest in life. That's just how it is. When was the last time anyone in rap media mentioned Kool Keith, or Dilated Peoples, or any host of other underground artists.

I'm just glad the music is so easily accessible because there are a lot of weird kids out there who will love DOOM. They just never knew he existed, until now.

this is true. but take nore out of it. even a nas, jay, face, dmx, snoop, dre, red, etc . it just seemed like the mainstream rappers never really gave him his props or ever shouted him out. not that he was seeking their validation or even needing it. im not taking anything away from dude at all and i didnt intend for it to come off that way. my point was just like damn i only know 2 people in my real life who really listened to DOOM and they were both white. I was just thinkin to myself like damn would i really even have got put on to his music like that if i wasnt browsing internet forums and shyt like that in the early 2000's
this is how i found most of my hiphop even the mainstream stuff we didn't have cable when i was younger in the uk

Was sweating trying to find a Madvillain vinyl. I slept earlier this year and didn't pick it up at my record shop before it sold.

Now the hypebeast effect is in and people bought them out and are running straight bidding wars on ebay for remaining copies.

Go figure the last place I look is the Stones Throw site and scooped one up easily. Would really like to find Born Like This to round out my collection.

Edit: back ordered until next month but what else is new with purchasing vinyl right now?

For me they would be 'Rhymes Like Dimes' or Figaro.:yeshrug:

I'd give em DOOMsday, with an intro of the first verse of 'Kiss Of Life' by Sade, to sort the real from the fake, but maybe that's just me :birdman:
