exactly and magic was 20
making 100k a year for a shoe deal at that time is ridiculous

In the 1979-80 season, the average salary in the NBA was $173,500.
People forgetting that NIke Exploded because of MJ. If Magic was the signature athlete for the brand when Michael got into the just 4 or 5 years later, maybe MJ doesn't sign with them. Some players don't wanna be second fiddle on their endorsement brands.
Can't know for sure how things could've worked out either way.

Hes a coli breh that use to post alot of insider Industry information. His threads were informative but when he started calling black folks jiggaboos and porch monkeys he got bushed .

Interesting enough he would talk about blacks with the same condescending tone as Gordon. Hmmm

It probably is him tbh.

This and we can't ignore how hip hop blew up the Jordan brand. MJ hit the perfect storm with that one.

Dallas, Texas but living in Houston, Texas
In 1979/80 and Phil Knight walks up on you with that deal do you take it
Nope. Nike I think was primarily known as a shoe for runners back in the 70s and early 80s. The shoe game was a lot different in the 70s and early to mid 80s than it is today. The Air Jordan truly changed the game when it came to shoes.

Can't knock Johnson for turning down Nike in favor of Converse back in 1979. In the end, it worked out in the end because Magic made more outside of basketball with his movie theaters, Starbucks, etc. Yeah he could have made more in the long run but it still worked out for him.

Nike were nobodies when they approached Jordan too. Difference is Jordan took the deal though because he eventually saw the vision.

If you read the link I posted in a couple of posts above yours, he actually wanted to wear Converse shoes because that is what he wore at UNC. But Converse already had Magic and Bird and they wouldn't match the deal that Nike gave him 500000 for 5 years and his own shoe.

MJ was going to sign with Adidas and Adidas only. But his agent and mom made him sit down with Nike after hearing how personally hands on Nike would be with him. Adidas didn't see the marquee value in MJ the same way Phil and Nike did. TBH though, Nike was hurting for a signature ball player.
