HBO cancelled it. They filmed that final scene with Jerry and Jeanie in the Forum as an alternate ending because they knew it might get cancelled.

So they tacked on that scene and all the epilogue with the captions when they got the word it had been cancelled.

Otherwise, the season would have just ended with a dejected Magic in the shower.
