A closed box portable console has guaranteed support for its full life and a standardized experience.

This is a mediocre gaming PC in portable form. Support is going to be all over the place. There may be games on your Steam account that aren't made compatible. It's the wild west and no company is going to force standards and universal compatibility.

If I bought one of these for myself it would be after at least a year or two of proven consistency in developers supporting it. Unfortunately in a few years it's specs will have further aged.

PC gaming isn't the place for a closed box dedicated handheld.

In the next few years, probably within 2, I'd expect a Switch successor. I'd rather buy that and have a closed box portable. Really it isn't even a fair comparison this to 2017 hardware. The Switch was $300 and has been fully supported for 6 years. In 6 years if there isn't a new Steam Deck you gonna be running games on lower settings on this one if you aren't already.
aka u haven’t used it. I’m not having this argument. U haven’t used or put time into this device. U don’t know the quirks, growing pains, pluses or minuses with this device. There is literally 1000s of games to play on this device only months in. The power is good enough to run plenty of newer games at 60fps. And I’m speaking high settings. Games don’t even have to run on high settings on a device so small. Right now. I can play every new game that drops on the go. At ATLEAST 30fps. Elden Ring ran better on Steam Deck than home PC’s because of Proton. Again. U sold urs. U don’t have experience with it. I’ve had it since launch. I was the FIRST person on this site to own one. There’s really no argument to be had with me.

My guess as to what happened to my Steam Deck. Buyer purchased the damn thing on eBay hoping I shipped it without signature conformation. FYI if you ever ship anything on eBay that cost over $750 without signature conformation the buyer can keep it file an INR claim and you're out of the item and the money. Anyway because I required a signature they simply aren't going to pick up the item and just let it be returned to me and see if they can find some fool that ships without a signature so they can keep that one. There's no way that thing has been sitting there for 4 days and they actually wanted it.

Meh same thing was said about the Xbox Series S. Games can be ran at lower specs because it's not a 4K device so it doesn't need all the power. Now about 2 years in developers are crying about it, calling it a bottle neck, and saying it's going to hamper this generation of consoles. They're also cutting back features on it in comparison to the games on the Series X.

Portable gaming is and will always be better in a closed box standardized environment where everyone has the same guaranteed experience. When variables are introduced problems will be introduced. You can have all the experience in the world with any given device and that's still a universal truth.

Beyond that I don't trust Valve. You tell me how the Steam Machines panned out. Remember the Steam Link? Steam controller? Did they ever really update any of that stuff or did it just come out and fade away?

This ain’t a Series S. They invested a lot into this device and it’s gotten no lie about 20 updates since release. It’s been getting updated weekly. Comparing this to Steam Machine or any of that other shyt is disingenuous. This is like a combination of ALL of their previous ventures in one device. Literally. Like I said u wouldn’t understand until u have used it yourself and learned the machine.

The year 3030
the only disappointing thing so far is some old games (point and click ones) either don't work or don't work well. But that's not surprising. Newer games obviously work great, but my library is more old games, haha.

These aren't popular enough to sell on FBM in my area. There's a few of them that have been sitting on there for weeks.

It isn't disingenuous to compare one product a company puts out to others they've put out in the past. Judging a company based on past performances is totally valid. Could be wrong but I'll take that chance as it cost me nothing. Buying a product from a company with a questionable track history of this sort of thing and having it not pan out has a cost.

Best of luck to you but I'll stick to companies that put out devices and have a proven record of long term support. Major reason I didn't buy a PSVR and won't buy the PSVR2 as well.

all those got a lot of updates. especially the Steam Controller. and the Steam Deck is basically the culmination of all those devices, and everything Valve learned from supporting them

This is what I’m trying to explain to him. I get annoyed arguing with people about something they have no experience with.

I'm probably in for some serious fukkery. Somehow the buyer got the Steam Deck from the UPS store and their tracking doesn't reflect it even though it required signature conformation. I did get him to admit he picked it up in an eBay message for whatever that's worth but I called the store it was allegedly at and it's gone. UPS tracking says come get it by tomorrow or they're returning it to sender. I did insure it so if they say it's lost I'm filing a claim if the buyer files an INR claim. I hate eBay. If that buyer at this point files an INR claim eBay will force a refund and I'm out of a Steam Deck.

Always insure your expensive eBay packages even if the buyer doesn't pay for that.

Any Ebay item I sell with a value over $100 gets shipped via UPS insured. I add handling costs that goes toward insurance. Now you got me nervous. I have a bunch of things I'm about to list on Ebay.
