Seems like the Black students want to segregate themselves and create a 'safe space' for themselves.

I am curious in knowing why these students could not go to an HBCU and get educated by a majority Black learning institution instead of getting educated @ a PWI and segregating themselves from others?

Lately, let's say this is a success..Once they graduate and enter the work world, how are they going to adjust to being around mostly non-Blacks?

They're still interacting with other people on campus, they just want a dorm to themselves. I don't think it's such a bad idea, it might be a deciding factor to a prospective student when they visit.

Imagine a bunch of men crying because some women have their own dorms and calling it sexist. This is how people look opposing this.

"you mean I don't get to hang nooses in their doorways freely...this is racist! :damn:"

Is that the only reason? Out of spite?

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Reuters) - A Chinese student attending Lehigh University in Pennsylvania has been arrested and charged with attempting to murder his roommate of four years with a component of rat poison he ordered online, prosecutors said.

Yukai Yang, 22, who is in the United States on a student visa, is to appear in court next month to face charges that he put thallium, a component of rat poison, in the milk and mouthwash of his roommate, Juwan Royal, who is black, according to charging documents.

Yang had already been under investigation for charges of ethnic intimidation for allegedly scrawling a racist message on Royal’s desk and damaging his TV last spring, shortly after authorities believe he began trying to poison Royal.

stuff like this.

A University of Hartford freshman has been expelled and faces a hate crime charge after she admitted to rubbing her body fluids on her black roommate's book bag and toothbrush.

Hartford Police are asking courts to charge 18-year-old Brianna Brochu with “intimidation based on bigotry or bias,” after she allegedly bragged on social media about harassing her roommate, according to NBC Connecticut.

segregation they way you're looking at it is an oppressive governmental forced thing. People naturally self-segregation already anyways. If you can't understand why some black people at a college might want to have their own floor in a dorm then you're ignorant. (and i'm not using ignorant as an insult here...not even coming at you like that.)
Mixing of cultures help college students for the real world. Imagine living separated for 4 or more years of college then being on your own in life not experiencing the good or bad of dealing with racial issues. Its going to cause further separation and anger (for some) towards other races.

Would everyone feel its a good idea if white people said they want their own dorms bc they don't want to live with black people?

This. But until black ppl own corporations and have pull to get graduates jobs as soon as they get out of school, going to a NYU or a Columbia can take you a little bit further an HBCU.

NYU is in the Village. You're gonna be around white people and gays no matter what.

:mjlol: Plus these black student unions and groups at places like NYU look like AfroPunk concerts. It's the embodiment of multiracialism and sexual acceptance.

This space they want to carve out is most likely done in that same vein and it's about positioning themselves in a multicultural context that they ACTUALLY LIKE and want to be apart of!!

Are they? Because I went to college and lived on dorms. Some Black students interacted with others while other Black students did not.

I believe that some students will prefer to only deal with other Black students on campus and may only deal with non Black students when necessary such as in class, study groups, after hour visits to the professor's office, etc. People simply self segregate which is their prerogative.

How I see it, sometimes, establishing connections with non-Blacks can be beneficial. The non Black person may be related to someone who owns a major corporation or has major influence in getting into grad school, law school, medical and dental school, etc.

My concern isn't so much about Black students wanting a dorm to themselves, but the aftermath of non-Blacks doing the same which could lead to other forms of segregation.

Get into the work force, then they will see how it really is, unless they have a specific plan to plan their career helping Black folks or relocating to a majority Black city or country and using their expertise to help people in that area/nation.

mixing cultures can happen in the class, food court, etc...these black students wanting a place to sleep and live around a few other black people is not excessive. And pulling out the "what if there was a white floor" thing is completely tonedeaf. And it's the type of argument used by the exact people these black students would want to avoid.

edit: your #1 objective in college should be your degree, not mixing cultures. And we can't sit up here in one side of our mouths constantly pushing the stereotype that blacks don't care about education, then turn around shytting on them for wanting to feel comfortable in an education space.

i can see both sides to the issue though. We've heard countless tales of black students facing harassment and micro-aggression's in these dorms by white peers. White people are the most segregated people in the country and when you have a bunch white students coming from a majority white town/city, majority white school and whose only knowledge of black folks is through the racist media. that upbringing can lead to encounters like this:
