I dated a North African (Moroccan)who was here in the US. We are actually still cool. She’s excited about Morocco making the semi finals.

She’s more of the socially aware/woke type tho.

She said she doesn’t identify as African American mainly because most black ppl don’t consider her black and that the connotation, in her opinion, for AA is one where you ancestors are probably from Western Africa .

She acknowledged that she doesn’t get the same discrimination in America that AAs do (due to her light skin and different hair texture) so she didn’t feel it was right to claim that.

Only because of their colonialism in Western Sahara. Morocco is a founding member of Organization of African Unity, the precursor to the AU but they withdrew in the 80s.

The AU was founded in 2002.

And actually quiet as it's kept. A lot of Africans(North and Sub Saharan) embrace a "continental" sense of Pan Africanism which just means anybody in and from Africa is African. So that would exclude you.

There are all sorts of light-skinned Ethiopian groups, light-skinned Somali groups, Libyans, Sudanese, and the Khoisan are all the way down in South Africa. And their genetics are all remarkably different - there's more diversity just between the groups I just listed than there is in the entire rest of the non-African world combined.

You're literally using a White European metric to define Africa - no one in Africa was dumb enough to define Africans by skin color until Europeans did it.

I think a lot people see traditional West African features and think most Africans look like or that they are all darkerskinned and that is not the case. Most Morrocans are African but there also some people mixed with Europeans and Arabs who also live there. But Morrocans by and large do not consider themselves Arab.

It's a sense of belonging. Africa is not just a continent, it's also an identity or a meta identity. That's the reason why most black african countries were supporting Cameroon when Milla was doing wonders in the world cup. They saw it as win for them too. It does not mean that there is no national identities and even frictions, it's just mean that people recognize that there is an entity they belong to with other people they see as their peers.

And North African countries most of the time exclude themselves from that. I'm not blaming them for doing that, I'm just noticing.

Well that’s why I asked because everywhere I’ve been seeing Moroccans is claiming Africa and correcting people on the Arab stuff.

That’s just on Twitter but I thought it was interesting.
